Malpractice and health insurance for JSU nursing students
Every JSU graduate nursing student carries malpractice coverage bought through the School of Nursing, renewed each year, and the proof has to be approved in the tracker before you reach out to any practicum or residency site. Health insurance is required as well, and JSU holds students responsible for their own medical costs in the clinical setting. This guide covers both, and the order they have to happen in.

Malpractice coverage comes through JSU
JSU leaves no room for shopping around. The graduate handbook states: "All Graduate Nursing students are required to purchase malpractice insurance through Jacksonville State University, School of Nursing." The coverage is professional liability insurance for your student role, and it appears on the CastleBranch list as a required item.
Because the purchase runs through the School of Nursing, a policy you already hold through an employer or on your own is not what the handbook asks for. Keep your personal policy if you like, but plan on JSU's coverage for your clinical courses.
The coverage renews every year. JSU's current documents do not publish what it costs, so ask the School of Nursing for the current figure and the purchase steps. Our own service is priced separately, and the cost page lists the factors behind a quote.
The rule that sets the order of everything
One sentence in the handbook shapes the whole clinical timeline: "Proof of this purchase must be uploaded to the Graduate Nursing Student Tracker System and approved prior to initiating any contact with practicum or residency sites."
Read it closely. Buying the coverage is not enough, and uploading the proof is not enough. The proof has to be approved in the tracker, which is CastleBranch, before the first message, call or visit to a site about a practicum or a residency. The handbook does not name the title of the person who approves it, so allow a margin between upload and outreach.
The rule applies to FNP and AGACNP practicums and to the DNP residencies alike. It matters again whenever a new site enters the picture, so keep the renewal current and avoid a lapse in the middle of a search.
Approval first, then site contact: JSU wants your malpractice proof approved in the tracker before you contact any practicum or residency site.
From purchase to first site contact
Here is the sequence the handbook implies, step by step. Leave a margin at each step, especially in the weeks just before a new term.

Health insurance: required every year
Health insurance is a separate requirement on the same tracker list. The handbook asks for Health Insurance form(s) downloaded each year from JSU's document tracker site, so the item renews annually even if your plan does not change.
If your coverage does change, the handbook wants you to tell the School of Nursing's Director of Clinical Services. Report a new plan, a lapse or a change of carrier as soon as it happens, and update the tracker to match.
The reason sits in another line of the handbook: "students are responsible for all costs related to the provision of medical care, as needed, in the clinical setting." If you need care during a clinical shift, the bill is yours, and your health plan is what stands behind it. You also sign an Exposure Release of Liability Student form in the tracker; read it closely before you sign.
Timing for NP practicums and DNP residencies
For BSN-DNP students, the first practicum is Practicum I, FNP 7869 or ANP 7869, offered in the spring. Any search for a spring site starts only after your malpractice approval is in place, so the purchase and upload belong in the fall before, not the week classes begin. The first clinical course guide sets out each program's starting term.
DNP residents face a longer horizon. JSU's DNP timeline says students "are paired with a preceptor and clinical site in late May" during DNP 8796, with contract paperwork submitted at that stage, and it calls for a consistent preceptor and site for 16 months. That span outlasts a yearly policy, so a renewal will fall in the middle of the residency. Mark the date early; the residency pairing guide covers the rest of that timeline.
Where insurance fits in site approval
Malpractice approval is the gate that opens site contact; it is not the whole approval. After contact comes the preceptor's credentials, any contract the site needs and faculty sign-off, which our preceptor and site approval guide covers in full.
Think of the order as three gates. First comes your own clearance: malpractice approval, health insurance and the rest of the tracker. Next come the preceptor's and site's details. Last comes review by JSU's faculty. Each gate depends on the one before it.
A site may ask to see proof of your coverage during its own onboarding. Keep a copy of the approved proof and your current health insurance card together so you can answer those requests quickly.

Can I use my own malpractice policy for JSU clinicals?
JSU's graduate handbook requires graduate nursing students to purchase malpractice insurance through the university's School of Nursing. A personal or employer policy is not what the handbook describes, so plan on buying JSU's coverage, uploading the proof to CastleBranch and waiting for approval before any site contact.
How much does JSU's student malpractice insurance cost?
JSU's current graduate handbook and program pages do not publish a figure for the coverage. The School of Nursing gives the current cost and the purchase steps when you enroll, and it may differ from one year to the next. Who approves my malpractice proof at JSU?

Do I need health insurance for JSU nursing clinicals?
