JSU's DNP timeline says students "are paired with a preceptor and clinical site in late May", and that the pair has to hold for the whole residency. That makes the choice settled in DNP 8796 the biggest clinical decision in the program. Here is what JSU publishes about it, and how to arrive at late May ready.

What JSU's timeline says
The source is the DNP Student Clinical Timeline, a PDF written for preceptors and posted on JSU's DNP pages. For the main track it states: "Students are paired with a preceptor and clinical site in late May." Contract paperwork is submitted at the same point.
It then fixes the length of the commitment: "All students will need to have a consistent preceptor and clinical site for 16 months during these courses." The timeline does not say who makes the pairing, so your DNP clinical coordinator is the person to ask how it runs for your cohort. Two tracks: late May and August
JSU runs the pairing on two tracks. Track 1 starts in May and is described as the most common. Track 2 is a smaller cohort that starts in August.
Your plan of study decides which one you follow. BSN-DNP students take DNP 8796, Project Planning and Development, in the summer after Practicum IV, which lines up with the May track. Post-Master's students who start in fall take DNP 8796 in their first summer; those who start in spring take it in their first fall, the pattern the August track fits. The residency year, stage by stage
- Late May: pairing and contractsThe preceptor and clinical site are settled in
DNP 8796, and contract paperwork is submitted. - Fall: faculty, IRB training and the proposalJSU assigns a faculty member and you finish IRB training. Your formal proposal, subject to faculty approval, lands around the turn from September to October, with IRB paperwork filed during October and November.
- January: implementationImplementation lasts eight to ten weeks. Four meetings happen on site, and the Executive Summary takes shape with content ideas from your preceptor.
- July: results and Dissemination DayResults are shared on site. JSU then brings DNP students, project facility staff and faculty to campus for Dissemination Day.
- August: graduationThe residency run closes with graduation, the end point of the commitment made in late May.

What 16 months asks of a preceptor and site
A consistent preceptor for 16 months is a far bigger ask than a one-semester practicum. The preceptor has to expect to stay in the same organization and role from late May through the following summer, and the organization has to host a quality-improvement project from proposal to results.

If the pairing changes mid-residency
JSU publishes no procedure for a residency preceptor or site that falls through. The closest rule sits in the handbook: any shift in your projected clinical experience goes to your faculty, your program coordinator and the graduate programs' administrative coordinator for approval, and the handbook stops short of promising that progression continues on schedule.

When are JSU DNP students paired for the residency?
On the main track, in late May during DNP 8796, when contract paperwork also goes in. A smaller August track serves students whose plan puts DNP 8796 in the fall, such as Post-Master's students who start in spring. Your plan of study shows which timing applies to you.
Can my JSU DNP residency happen at my own workplace?
JSU's public documents do not rule on residency projects at a student's employer. The residency centers on a quality-improvement project inside one organization for 16 months, so ask your DNP clinical coordinator whether your workplace qualifies and how role boundaries are handled. Is the Post-Master's DNP residency the same as the BSN-DNP one?
In structure, yes. Both use DNP 8796 for project planning and the pairing, then three residency courses of 210 hours apiece, all with one preceptor and site. The difference is timing: Post-Master's students reach DNP 8796 in their first year, while BSN-DNP students reach it after four NP practicums.
Does a JSU DNP residency preceptor have to be a nurse practitioner?
JSU does not publish qualifications for residency preceptors. Because the work is a quality-improvement project inside an organization, the preceptor's reach within that organization matters alongside clinical credentials. What happens at JSU's DNP Dissemination Day?
In July, after project results are shared on site, JSU gathers DNP students, faculty and staff from the project facilities on campus to talk through each DNP project. It is one of the on-campus events JSU lists for its online DNP programs, and graduation follows in August.
