JSU's Post-Master's DNP: six semesters, three residencies and one long placement
JSU's Post-Master's DNP builds on an MSN with clinical hours and reaches the practice doctorate in 36 credits over about two years, summers included. Its clinical weight sits in three residencies worth 630 hours, served with a single preceptor and site. If your MSN logged fewer than 500 practicum hours, a catch-up clinical course, NU 5841, is added.

Who the Post-Master's DNP is built for
JSU admits master's-prepared nurses whose MSN had "a clinical focus validating 500 clinical practicum hours", and it says applicants need not be nurse practitioners. So a nurse whose clinically focused MSN led somewhere other than NP practice can apply alongside nurse practitioners. The GPA bar is 3.0, and an unencumbered RN license is required, though JSU words the license rule two different ways; the RN license page compares them.
Delivery is online, though JSU's program page flags possible on-campus events, orientation and the sharing of scholarly projects among them. JSU's DNP timeline brings students to campus in July for Dissemination Day, where projects are presented to faculty and site staff.
Start terms need a quick check. The School of Nursing's web page and its two plans of study support both fall (May 1 deadline) and spring (October 1) entry, while the catalog's Post-Master's admission text names only the May 1 date and says applicants are considered for fall. The program coordinator can tell you which applies to the cycle you are aiming for.
Under 500 MSN hours: NU 5841 first
Applicants whose MSN documented fewer than 500 practicum hours can be conditionally admitted. A gap analysis sets how much extra clinical work you owe, and that work is completed in NU 5841 Advanced Experiential Clinical Course.
The 2026-27 catalog lists NU 5841 at 1 to 6 credits, graded pass or fail, with somewhere between 100 and 500 clinical hours required depending on the gap. JSU's admission wording describes the course as 1 to 5 hours instead, one more small mismatch to raise with the program coordinator. JSU also notes that hours in this course may be completed with organizational leaders, so a leadership setting can count alongside direct care.

Six semesters from either entry point
The program is 12 three-credit courses plus a zero-credit online orientation, NU 8001. The table follows JSU's two plans of study; residency courses start in the second year either way.

The non-clinical courses cover scientific underpinnings of advanced practice, evidence-based practice and quality improvement, policy and finance, biostatistics, population health, organizational leadership, collaboration and informatics. Fall entrants reach DNP 8796 in their first summer, which lines up with the late-May pairing; spring entrants take it in their first fall, the pattern of JSU's August track.
DNP 8796 and 630 hours with one site
DNP 8796 DNP Project Planning and Development carries no clinical hours, yet it is the hinge of the program. JSU's DNP timeline says the preceptor and site pairing and the contract paperwork happen there, in late May for most students and in August for a smaller cohort. The DNP 8796 page covers that course in depth.
Then come DNP 8797, DNP 8798 and DNP 8799, 210 hours each for the 630 the catalog requires. Residencies II and III carry pass/fail grades, and the catalog notes a student may be required to repeat DNP 8796. JSU expects the same preceptor and site across all three, a span of 16 months. JSU's DNP timeline asks preceptors to meet with students during implementation and to suggest content for the Executive Summary. JSU does not post its own qualifications for DNP preceptors; the preceptor requirements page sets out what is published, including Alabama's rule. Rules that shape your progress
Graduate grading at JSU leaves little room. Each later course assumes the work before it earned a B or better. A single course with a C or lower can be repeated one time, and that repeat must bring an A or B; C grades on more than 3 credits take a student out of the program. An unresolved incomplete blocks the next semester's registration, which matters when residencies run back to back.
Credits from other schools cannot transfer into the DNP, and the program must be finished within seven years. Unlike the BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks, the Post-Master's route has no comprehensive exam. JSU's graduate handbook also asks every student to report a change in state of residence, employer or planned clinical experience, and each change needs approval, which is worth knowing before switching jobs mid-residency.

Questions JSU students ask
Is there a comprehensive exam in JSU's Post-Master's DNP?
No. JSU's graduate handbook reserves the comprehensive exam for the BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks and states that the Post-Master's DNP and the MSN have none. Your main milestones are the DNP project stages instead: the proposal and IRB application in the fall, implementation from January, and results shared on site and at Dissemination Day in July.
What is NU 531 on JSU's Post-Master's DNP page?
It is the old number for the Advanced Experiential Clinical Course. The 2026-27 catalog lists that course as NU 5841, but JSU's Post-Master's web page and the catalog's admission paragraph still print NU 531, and the web page shows the residencies as DNP 796 to 799. Register under the current catalog numbers and ask your advisor if anything looks mismatched.
Can I complete my DNP residency where I work?
JSU's published graduate materials do not set a rule on residencies at your own employer. What JSU does publish is the need for one preceptor and site across 16 months and a duty to report any change in employment. Can I apply to JSU's Post-Master's DNP from outside Alabama?
The five-state limit JSU publishes applies to its nurse practitioner tracks. For the Post-Master's DNP, JSU asks prospective students to check with the School of Nursing on whether the program is open in their state before they apply. JSU takes part in NC-SARA, but it posts no professional licensure disclosure for this program, so confirm your state before you submit an application.
How long does JSU's Post-Master's DNP take?
JSU's plans of study run six semesters, about two years with summers included, from either a fall or spring start. Students who need NU 5841 for missing MSN hours add that course on top. A repeated course or a leave of absence stretches the timeline, and the DNP must be completed within seven years of starting.
