Why every quote starts from your course
JSU's clinical courses ask for very different placements. FNP 7869 is a 120-hour spring practicum, ANP 7877 carries 280 hours in acute care, the teaching practicum in NU 5982 runs 100 hours, and the three DNP residencies, DNP 8797 through DNP 8799, keep one preceptor and site for 16 months. The work behind each of those searches differs, and the quote follows the work.
That is why your advisor asks for your program and course before talking about cost. A quote written around your actual practicum is clearer than a menu of packages, and it tells you what you are getting before anything starts. Your advisor also points out any conflict in JSU's own figures, such as ANP 7869, which carries different hours in the catalog and the plans of study.
The five things that shape a quote
Five factors do most of the shaping. Your advisor explains how each one applies to you.
- The course and its hours. A 120-hour practicum and a 16-month residency are different searches, and JSU's 2026-27 catalog sets the hours for each course.
- The setting. Family practice with pediatric, obstetric, adult and geriatric patients, a hospital unit for acute care, a public health agency or a nursing classroom each draw on a different pool of preceptors.
- Where you live. A student in Birmingham or Huntsville has more clinicians within a short drive than one in a rural county of northeast Alabama, and a wider driving radius opens more options.
- Lead time. A search that starts months before the semester has room to compare clinicians. One that starts a few weeks out calls for faster, more concentrated work.
- Scope. One practicum, a full year of NP practicums or a residency, and whether you want a backup lined up from the start.
What every quote covers
Whatever the scope, the core of the service stays the same, and it is written into your quote so you know what to expect.

One practicum or the whole sequence
JSU schedules its four NP practicums back to back, from one spring through the next, each one paired with a lecture course, and the DNP residencies come after. Some students ask us for one course at a time. Others plan the whole run from Practicum I onward, which lets your advisor look for preceptors who could host you across more than one semester when the populations fit.
Both approaches work, and the quote shows the difference. Planning ahead also protects your calendar: each NP practicum is offered in only one term a year, and JSU's co-requisite rule means a failed practicum or lecture course is retaken together, so a lost semester can cost a year. Costs JSU sets, separate from ours
Some expenses come from JSU's own requirements and sit outside any placement quote. JSU's graduate handbook requires malpractice insurance bought through the School of Nursing and renewed each year, a CastleBranch account for your compliance records, a background check, drug screens before clinicals and at random, current health insurance and a yearly physical.
Under the same handbook, any medical care you need in the clinical setting is your own expense, and travel to and from the site belongs in your own budget as well. How to get your quote
Fill in the form below with your JSU program, your next clinical course, your town and that course's semester. Your placement advisor replies with a written quote built on those details and walks you through each part. If your plan changes, for example a retaken course that shifts your practicum to the following year, tell your advisor and the quote is revisited to match.
Questions before you decide are welcome at any point, from how the search runs in your area to what the clearance file includes. Your advisor can set a quote for a single course beside one that covers the rest of your sequence, so you can choose the scope that suits your plan. Questions JSU students ask
Why does a DNP residency quote differ from an NP practicum quote?
The commitment is longer. JSU asks residency students to keep one preceptor and clinical site for 16 months across three residency courses, with a quality-improvement project the site hosts. Finding a preceptor and organization ready for that span takes a different search than a single-semester practicum, and the quote reflects it.
Is a placement in rural Alabama priced differently from one in Birmingham?
It can be. The quote reflects how many clinicians in your track practice within your driving range and how much searching it takes to reach them. A wider radius or a flexible schedule often widens the pool. Your advisor explains how your location figures into your own quote.
Is JSU's malpractice insurance part of your quote?
No. Graduate students purchase their malpractice policy from JSU's School of Nursing and post proof in CastleBranch, where it has to be cleared ahead of any site contact. That purchase goes to JSU. Your advisor checks that the approval is in place before any site outreach begins.
Can I get a quote before I start the NP courses?
Yes. You can ask in your first year, long before Practicum I opens in your second spring. An early quote lets you plan the sequence and your budget together, and your advisor can update it when your course, your town or your timing changes.
Does a fast-approaching start date change the quote?
It can. A search that begins a few weeks before the semester concentrates the same work into less time, with more outreach and quicker turnaround on paperwork. Put your course start date on the form so the quote matches your timeline. The urgent placement page covers short-notice searches.
