Which JSU students we work with
If your JSU program carries practicum or residency hours, we cover it. That means both BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks, family and adult-gerontology acute care; the Post-Master's DNP; all three versions of the MSN in Population Health; the Nursing Education certificate; the online RN-to-BSN known as STEP; and the campus BSN. The Emergency Preparedness Nursing Coordinator certificate is classroom-only, so it needs no preceptor. Graduate and undergraduate students alike start with the same short form.
One point surprises many applicants: JSU teaches nurse practitioners only inside the BSN-DNP. There is no separate MSN nurse practitioner track, and the MSN comes partway through, after the fourth NP practicum. How our work fits JSU's own arrangements
JSU's public pages describe several pieces of its clinical side without spelling out who arranges each placement. Its DNP timeline says residency students are paired with a preceptor and site in late May, and a newer JSU page invites community organizations to offer to host FNP and ANP students. Your track's clinical coordinator can tell you how placements run for your cohort.
However your placement comes together, we line up a clinician and practice that satisfy JSU's requirements and prepare what its faculty review. If part of it is already arranged, we fill the gaps, from a later course to a backup. The three routes to a preceptor are compared in full on their own page.
When to start planning
Earlier than most students expect. In both the fall-admission and spring-admission plans of study, the first NP practicum, FNP 7869 or ANP 7869, falls in the spring of Year 2, and it follows advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment. From there the practicums run four semesters without a break.
DNP residency planning starts with DNP 8796, which Post-Master's students reach in their first year, in summer after a fall start or in fall after a spring start, and MSN Population Health students meet their first practicum, NU 5980, in a summer term. Because JSU offers each NP practicum in only one term a year, a start that slips can move the rest of your sequence. The first clinical course guide gives the term for each program.
Who can be your preceptor
JSU's public materials say NP students earn hours with a licensed preceptor, and they stop there: a fuller list of preceptor qualifications for the NP courses is not published. State rules for Alabama's advanced practice programs let an APRN, a physician or another suitably licensed clinician who treats the matching population serve as preceptor.
In practice, fit matters as much as title. An FNP practicum covering pediatric, adult, obstetric and geriatric patients needs a preceptor whose panel spans them, while the AGACNP courses focus on acutely ill patients from their late teens onward. Check fit before a preceptor agrees, since a switch mid-semester costs hours. Your course faculty confirm it, and JSU's published wording is gathered in the preceptor requirements guide.
How many clinical hours you need
Count by course, not by program total. JSU publishes three answers that disagree: 700 hours on the FNP and AGACNP web pages, 1330 as the catalog's BSN-DNP graduation requirement, and a different sum again when you add the current catalog's course-by-course hours. The 700-hour figure includes simulation, and Alabama's nursing education rules generally cap simulation at half of a course unless the Board of Nursing authorizes more.
The 2026-27 catalog's per-course numbers are the safest guide, for example 250 hours in FNP 7875 and 210 in each DNP residency. Even single courses vary: the plans of study give ANP 7869 110 hours where the catalog lists 70. Your course faculty settle any gap, and the clinical hours hub sets the numbers out program by program.
Living outside Alabama
For the NP tracks, JSU reviews applications only from people living in Alabama or one of four neighbors: Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. For the MSN, STEP and Post-Master's programs, anyone living outside Alabama is asked to check in with the School of Nursing first, and JSU's NP licensure disclosure marks Alabama as meeting requirements while listing other states as not yet determined. JSU also takes part in NC-SARA, the national reciprocity agreement for distance education.
Each neighboring state treats clinicals run by an Alabama program in its own way, and a few add steps for the school. We search for preceptors in your own state and build its requirements into the plan. Mississippi and Tennessee residents in particular should ask JSU how their state's review applies. Is Jacksonville State University the same school as Jacksonville University?
No. Jacksonville State University, known as JSU or Jax State, is in Jacksonville, Alabama, and its School of Nursing belongs to the College of Health Professions and Wellness at the JSU South Complex. Jacksonville University is a separate school in Florida. This site serves JSU nursing students only.
How much does a placement cost?

Do I still handle CastleBranch if you find my preceptor?
Yes. Your CastleBranch record and your JSU malpractice coverage stay in your name, and JSU can hold up course registration when required documents are missing. We check with you that both are current and approved before we contact any site, so nothing in your record slows the clearance.
What does the placement desk need from me to get started?
Five details: which JSU program you are in, the clinical course coming up, its semester, where you live and your driving limit. If you already have a preceptor in mind or part of your placement is set, include that too. Send it through the contact form and a placement advisor replies.
Can you help after my practicum has already started?
Yes. If a preceptor leaves partway through or your hours fall behind, a placement advisor starts looking for a replacement straight away and prepares the new preceptor's details for JSU's faculty. Tell your course faculty too, since JSU asks students to report changes to their projected clinical experience.
