Birmingham gathers academic medicine, several hospital groups, a children's hospital and a VA medical center in one metro, which gives a JSU student many clinicians to consider and just as many separate rulebooks. None of their public student pages was found to name JSU. We sort through the metro for you and bring a preceptor whose practice fits the practicum or residency on your plan of study.

One metro, many rulebooks
A Birmingham address puts you among a wide spread of settings: university hospitals and clinics, a family of community hospitals under the Baptist Health name, pediatric specialty care and veterans' care, plus private practices across the city and its suburbs. For a JSU nurse practitioner or DNP student, that variety is the good news.
Need is uneven across the region, too. HRSA's summary as of June 30, 2026 counts 135 primary care shortage designations in Alabama, covering about 2.65 million residents, so practices in the smaller towns around Birmingham deserve a look next to the famous names.
The harder part is that each group writes its own rules for students from outside programs, and several publish none at all. Sorting matters as much as searching. How Birmingham's systems describe student access
Here is what each system's public pages said when checked. They show where Birmingham clinicians practice, and none of them offers a spot to a JSU student.
- UAB Medicine: no page for students from outside schools. UAB's own School of Nursing sends its students through an Office of Clinical Placement and asks them not to contact sites directly, a rule for UAB students rather than a hospital policy.
- UAB St. Vincent's: the former Ascension St. Vincent's, owned by UAB since November 1, 2024, with no student page of its own.
- Baptist Health: the former Brookwood Baptist group, now part of Orlando Health, with Brookwood, Princeton, Shelby, Walker and Citizens hospitals. Its old student page returns an error, and UAB's nursing school lists it as an ACEMAPP site.
- Grandview Medical Center: a Community Health Systems hospital with no public student page.
- Children's of Alabama: its own Preceptorship Request Form and a required orientation, written with undergraduate students in mind.
- Birmingham VA: a VA affiliation agreement with the school and a trainee listing come first.
The pattern holds across much of Alabama. Where a system states a rule, the school needs an agreement in place and the NP student usually arrives with a named preceptor.
Matching Birmingham settings to JSU's practicums
For AGACNP students, a metro dense with hospital services is useful ground. The acute care practicums climb from 70 hours in ANP 7869 (110 on JSU's plans of study, a conflict to settle with faculty) to 210, 250 and then 280 hours in ANP 7877. Hospitalist, critical care and specialty teams are where those preceptors tend to practice, and the AGACNP practicum guide covers each course.
FNP students need primary care, which in Birmingham means offices large and small from downtown to the suburbs. FNP 7869 opens with 120 hours in the spring of year two, followed by 210, 250 and 250 hours over the next three semesters, each taken alongside its lecture course. A residency site that holds for 16 months
The DNP residency is where Birmingham's size cuts both ways. JSU's DNP timeline sets the preceptor and site pairing in late May during DNP 8796, or in August for a smaller cohort, and expects the same pair to see you through DNP 8797, DNP 8798 and DNP 8799.
Large organizations raise rich quality-improvement questions, yet recent ownership moves, such as St. Vincent's shift to UAB and Baptist Health's place within Orlando Health, are worth weighing when you need one sponsor for 16 months. We look for a preceptor with the standing to back a project, time for the four on-site meetings during spring implementation, and a site likely to stay steady through July. Campus days back in Jacksonville
Birmingham students travel to Jacksonville for the events JSU lists on its online DNP track pages: orientation to the program and track, on-site simulated learning, and the dissemination of scholarly projects. JSU has not published how many campus days to expect or when, apart from Dissemination Day in July.
Two scheduling points follow. A Birmingham clinical schedule should leave room for a trip east when a course calls you in. Your DNP preceptor may be invited as well, because JSU's timeline asks project facility staff to join students and faculty on campus for Dissemination Day. Questions JSU students ask
Does UAB accept nurse practitioner students from other schools?
UAB Medicine posts no page for students from outside programs. The clearest published rule belongs to UAB's own School of Nursing, which routes its students through an Office of Clinical Placement and asks them not to approach sites themselves. A UAB-affiliated clinician is a possibility to raise with JSU's faculty, who clear every preceptor and site for your course.
Do Birmingham hospitals use ACEMAPP?
ACEMAPP is the only third-party portal named on Alabama hospital pages, and UAB's nursing school lists Baptist Health, the former Brookwood Baptist group, as an ACEMAPP site. JSU's own compliance tracker is CastleBranch. ACEMAPP's listing for Jacksonville State University covers respiratory therapy only, so check with faculty before assuming a portal applies to you.
Can a JSU FNP student train at Children's of Alabama?
Children's publishes a Preceptorship Request Form and a required orientation aimed at undergraduate nursing students, with no separate nurse practitioner route. Whether pediatric specialty hours fit an FNP practicum is a question for your course faculty. Pediatric clinicians also practice in community offices around the metro, which can be a simpler match for a practicum.
Will my Birmingham DNP preceptor have to come to Jacksonville?
JSU's DNP timeline invites project facility staff to campus for Dissemination Day in July, alongside students and faculty, so your preceptor may be asked. Attendance rules for preceptors are not published. Results are also shared at the organization itself in July, which keeps most of the preceptor's part of the project in Birmingham.
How early should a Birmingham student start looking?
JSU publishes no lead time for NP practicums, and Birmingham's systems set their own clocks where they publish one at all. Starting well before the semester leaves time for CastleBranch, malpractice approval, the site's paperwork and faculty review. For the DNP residency, plan backward from the late-May pairing.
