Background checks and drug screens for JSU nursing students

The background check comes before acceptance

JSU's graduate handbook puts the check at the very front of the program: "All nursing students must have a background check completed prior to acceptance." The rule covers every nursing student, graduate and undergraduate alike, and the traditional BSN lists both a background check and a drug screen among its admission requirements.

What the handbook leaves out is the company that runs the graduate check. JSU's Program Information page links background check information in its BSN section, but no graduate page, handbook or catalog entry names a vendor for FNP, AGACNP, DNP or MSN students. Your admission instructions and the Director of Clinical Services, who also coordinates CastleBranch, are the places to confirm which service applies to you and how the result reaches your file.

Because the check is tied to acceptance, most students clear it months before a first clinical course. That timing helps: a finding raised early leaves room to talk it through before a preceptor or site is involved.

JSU's three kinds of drug testing

Drug testing at JSU sits under the School of Nursing's Impairment and Substance Abuse Testing Policy, which the graduate handbook summarizes as "pre-clinical testing, random testing, and mandatory drug testing based upon reasonable suspicion." Each one works on a different trigger.

1. Pre-clinical testingA screen completed before clinical work begins. JSU's public pages do not give the exact window, so ask whether the screen must fall inside a set number of days before your first practicum or residency.
2. Random testingA screen JSU can request at any point in the program without a specific cause. Keep your contact details current so a request does not sit unread.
3. Reasonable suspicionMandatory testing when there is a reason to believe a student may be impaired, for example in the clinical setting.

The vendor and the charge for graduate drug screens are not in the handbook, the catalog or the program pages. Look for ordering steps in your admission instructions and your CastleBranch account, and ask the Director of Clinical Services if neither shows them.

Timing around your first clinical

The background check lands at admission, but the pre-clinical drug screen belongs to the months just before your first clinical course. For BSN-DNP students that is Practicum I in the spring of Year 2, and for DNP residents it is the residency pairing in late May. The first clinical course guide lists each program's starting point.

Two JSU rules shape the order. Malpractice proof must be approved in the tracker before you contact any practicum or residency site, and clearance must be complete before patient contact. Build your calendar backward from the first clinical day: screen results and tracker approvals first, then site onboarding, then the first shift.

If you work in health care already, your employer's check and screen are separate from JSU's. JSU publishes no rule that accepts an employer's results in place of its own, so plan on JSU's process even if you plan clinicals where you work.
