Living in Maine and considering JSU nursing
Maine is a long way from JSU's campus in Jacksonville, Alabama, and Maine residents cannot apply to the FNP or AGACNP track, which JSU opens only to a handful of Southern states. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN are worth a message to the School of Nursing. Maine's board has published little about outside programs, so the practical questions center on licensing and travel.

JSU's programs, seen from Maine
The two BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks belong to residents of Alabama and four neighbors: Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. A Maine address rules them out. The remaining graduate options come with no state list, only JSU's request that non-Alabama applicants write in first. The five-state rule page gives the details.

What Maine's board has on record
Search Maine's nursing rules for a provision on outside schools using Maine clinical sites and you come up empty; our research found neither a rule nor Board guidance on it. The Board's education chapter deals with approving Maine's own prelicensure programs. The practice act's student exemption is aimed at people in Board-approved programs heading toward a first license, not at RNs in graduate study.
Absent a posted rule, JSU's School of Nursing can confirm how it treats a Maine residency or practicum site.
Full practice in Maine, after a transition
AANP places Maine among its full practice states, with a condition attached. A newly licensed NP first logs two years (24 months) of practice under a supervising NP or physician, or else is employed by a hospital or clinic whose medical director is a physician. Maine's RNs have held compact licenses since early 2018, and the APRN Compact is not active there. Alabama, by contrast, requires NPs to keep a collaborative agreement with a physician.
Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
Portland-South Portland is the largest metro in Maine, at about 578,000 people in 2025, with Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn well behind. MaineHealth is one of the large systems; others include Northern Light Health, MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare, noted here only as examples of where care is delivered.
Heading south for the NP tracks
Relocation changes the picture: settle in any of the five and JSU will weigh an FNP or AGACNP application from you, though the seat itself is JSU's to give. Maine and all five share compact membership. Alabama adds a wrinkle, since its board wants an Alabama-issued license from anyone who makes Alabama their primary home. The RN license page sets out JSU's own wording, which differs between sources.
Distance matters for the Post-Master's DNP as well: each July JSU gathers DNP students, their project sites' staff and its faculty in Jacksonville for Dissemination Day, and orientation or simulation may add trips; see on-campus requirements.

Questions JSU students ask
Is JSU's AGACNP track open to a nurse in Portland, Maine?
No, not with a Maine address. The acute care track, like the FNP track, draws applicants only from JSU's five Southern states. Relocating there makes you someone JSU will consider, and the decision remains JSU's. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN are different: no list is posted, and the School of Nursing asks to be contacted before you apply.
Does Maine regulate clinicals run by out-of-state nursing programs?
Not in any rule our research could find. Maine's education chapter concerns approval of the state's own prelicensure programs and says nothing about schools elsewhere sending students to Maine sites. Ask JSU's School of Nursing how it handles a Maine residency or practicum site before one is chosen.
Would I need to travel to Alabama from Maine?
Plan on it. JSU's graduate pages list orientation, hands-on simulation and the sharing of scholarly projects among possible campus events, and DNP students return each July for Dissemination Day. JSU does not publish how many other visits there are or when, so confirm them with your program coordinator.
Can a brand-new NP practice independently in Maine?
Not right away. AANP counts Maine as full practice, but a new NP first completes 24 months of supervised practice with an NP or physician, or works for a clinic or hospital led by a physician medical director. That transition is Maine's requirement, separate from anything JSU asks of its students or graduates.
