Studying with Jax State while living in Alaska
From an Alaska address, JSU's online FNP and AGACNP tracks are closed for now: Jax State considers applicants to them only from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN in Population Health print no state list, so for those, begin by contacting the School of Nursing. Below: Alaska's own rules, and what shifts if you relocate.

Jax State's NP licensure disclosure, still dated October 15, 2021, marks Alaska as not yet determined, the same mark every state but Alabama carries. The five-state rule page shows where JSU prints the limit.
Alaska registers each APRN student
Rather than approving schools, Alaska signs off on people. Its rule, 12 AAC 44.460, has the Board of Nursing register each student who does clinical work in Alaska for an APRN course of study run from another state, using form 08-4253. The Board is approving the person, not the program.
The file pairs an RN license, from Alaska or elsewhere, in good standing with a record showing you are presently in APRN study, plus a copy of the four-party agreement among school, facility, student and preceptor. A registration lapses at the earlier of two points, the close of the preceptorship or its first anniversary, and one renewal is allowed.
On the Alaska end, the preceptor is an APRN or a physician whose Alaska license or privilege is active and unrestricted, working in a focus comparable to yours. The rule speaks of APRN students, so put the question of a Post-Master's DNP residency to both the Board and JSU.
Licensing, practice and care across the state
Alaska is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Bills to change that, House Bill 131 and Senate Bill 124, were still listed from the 2025-2026 session on the Board's own compact page, so for now an Alaska RN license covers Alaska only. AANP's practice-environment ranking puts Alaska at full practice.
Anchorage is the one large metro, near 406,000 residents in 2025 census estimates, with Fairbanks-College and the Juneau micro area well behind. Examples of the state's systems include the Alaska Native Medical Center, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Palmer's Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, Alaska Regional Hospital and Foundation Health Partners in Fairbanks.
What relocating to a five-state address changes
Once you live in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee, you join the group JSU considers for its NP tracks; being considered is not a seat, and admissions still decides.
Your license changes as well. All five states belong to the compact, so a multistate license from the new home state would replace the Alaska-only credential. JSU's web pages and its 2026-27 catalog word the RN license rule differently, as the license page explains. Questions JSU students ask
Can I enroll in JSU's online FNP track from Anchorage?
Not while Alaska is your home state. JSU's graduate nursing page limits application consideration for the FNP and AGACNP tracks to residents of five Southeastern states, and archived copies show the note in place since 2020. After a move to one of them you would apply as its resident, and JSU's admissions review decides from there.
Is JSU's Post-Master's DNP open to Alaska residents?
JSU prints no state list for it. Its graduate page asks prospective Post-Master's DNP students outside the NP tracks to reach the School of Nursing before applying, and the DNP pages note that some programs are not offered in every state. Ask how residency hours in Alaska would work. The Post-Master's DNP page covers the residencies.
Does an Alaska RN license let me work in Alabama?
No. Alaska sits outside the compact, so its license carries no multistate privilege. Alabama's board lets multistate license holders from other compact states practice in Alabama until Alabama becomes their primary home. A nurse relocating from Alaska would apply for a license in whichever state becomes the new residence.
Do out-of-state faculty need an Alaska license?
Sometimes. Alaska's rule 12 AAC 44.090(h) requires an Alaska RN license for outside faculty once grading Alaska clinical coursework, together with any other nursing education or consulting in the state, exceeds 20 working days in a licensing period. Brief involvement stays below that line.
