Colorado nurses weighing Jax State's programs
If you call Colorado home, Jax State's two NP tracks are off the table: JSU reviews FNP and AGACNP applications only from residents of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. Its Post-Master's DNP and MSN in Population Health are a separate question, with no printed state list and a request that you speak with the School of Nursing first. On graduate programs from elsewhere, Colorado's rulebook is close to silent.

Colorado's program rules stop at pre-licensure
Read Rule 1.2 of Colorado's nursing rules (3 CCR 716-1) with a JSU practicum in mind and it has little to say to you. Its idea of a nursing education program is entry-level schooling toward a first RN or LPN license, overseen by a Board housed in the Division of Professions and Occupations. For a post-licensure or APRN program based in another state, it sets no approval or notice step. Any Board guidance published beyond the written rules is unverified.
Nor does Colorado's student permit help a JSU student. That permit is meant for graduates and students of nontraditional programs in other states, the kind with no faculty-supervised clinical work, who must log hours in Colorado before they can be licensed.
Full practice, with a 750-hour condition
AANP counts Colorado as full practice, yet prescribing comes with a gate. A new NP's prescriptive authority depends on an attestation of 750 hours worked under a mentoring agreement, the mentor being either a physician or an APRN. RN licensing is simpler: Colorado entered the compact in January 2018, so any compact state's multistate license is good there for RN work.
A preceptor credit that stays in Colorado
Colorado's rural and frontier preceptor credit is an income tax break for qualifying preceptorships in shortage areas. HB22-1005 opened it to RNs and other licensed outpatient professionals as well as advanced practice nurses, allowed up to 300 preceptors a year, and carried it through tax years beginning before 2033. Whether it reaches a JSU student's preceptor is answered in the questions below.
The 2025 census estimates put metro Denver (Denver-Aurora-Centennial) near 3.1 million people, with Colorado Springs next and Greeley and Fort Collins-Loveland under 400,000 each. Systems there include Denver Health, UCHealth, HCA HealthONE, CommonSpirit's Colorado hospitals and Utah-based Intermountain Health, which runs Denver's Saint Joseph Hospital.
Changing states for the NP tracks
The NP tracks open only after your home moves to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee, and even then JSU's admissions review has the last word. Colorado's compact membership smooths the license step: every one of the five is a compact member, and a permanent move means the new home state reissues your multistate license.
Each of the five treats an Alabama program's clinicals in its own way; compare Alabama with Tennessee. Students already enrolled at JSU who relocate must report the change, and it needs approval before their plan of study goes on.

Questions JSU students ask
Can I apply to JSU's FNP track from Denver?
Only after moving. A Colorado resident falls outside the five states JSU considers for its BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks. Establish residence in one of them and you can apply from there, with JSU's admissions review deciding.
Does a JSU practicum in Colorado need the Board's approval?
None appears in the written rules. Colorado's approval rule is about entry-level programs and says nothing about graduate programs based elsewhere. Guidance on the Board's website was not checked, so confirm with the Board and JSU's School of Nursing ahead of any Colorado practicum plans.
Does Colorado's preceptor tax credit reach JSU students?
It seems not. Since HB22-1005, the credit only counts preceptorships for students of accredited colleges and universities located in Colorado. JSU is an Alabama institution, so a Colorado preceptor teaching one of its students would not appear to qualify, even in a rural or frontier area.
Is JSU's Post-Master's DNP available to Colorado residents?
JSU prints no state list for it and asks prospective students outside Alabama to contact the School of Nursing before applying. Bring up where your 630 residency hours would happen in that first conversation. The Post-Master's DNP page explains the three residency courses.
