Idaho nurses and Jax State: what you can apply for
JSU's Family Nurse Practitioner and acute care tracks consider applicants from five Southern states, and Idaho is not one of them. Two other JSU programs with clinical hours, the Post-Master's DNP and the MSN, post no state list, so the School of Nursing is your first contact. Idaho's board says little about outside schools, which puts the focus on your license and your preceptor.

Idaho and JSU's program list
The BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks, Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care, are reserved for people living in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee. With an Idaho address, those two tracks stay closed. JSU's five-state rule has the exact wording.

JSU's NP licensure disclosure, dated October 15, 2021, marks Idaho as not yet determined, the label every state except Alabama carries. The licensure disclosure guide explains it.
No Idaho rule written for outside schools
Idaho's nursing board sits within DOPL, the state's occupational licensing agency. Its statute and rules on program approval speak to schools teaching in Idaho, and our research found nothing in them about clinical placements arranged by a school from another state. For those schools, the Board's website simply invites an email asking what applies, which is a question for JSU's School of Nursing to raise.
Two Idaho provisions still matter to a working RN. One allows a nurse holding an Idaho license, or the compact privilege, to perform advanced practice duties while matriculated in a nationally accredited APRN program, as long as the work is part of the coursework. The other, a Board education policy adopted in 2024, says a clinical preceptor's license should be no lower than the one the student is training toward.
Compact license, full practice and Idaho's providers
Idaho has issued multistate RN licenses since early 2018, though it has not signed on to the APRN Compact. AANP counts Idaho among its full practice states, a sharp contrast with Alabama, where NPs work under a collaborative agreement with a physician.
Around 864,000 people lived in the Boise City metro in 2025; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls are the next largest. Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, Saint Alphonsus and St. Luke's are among the state's major providers, named only to sketch the market.
If you trade Idaho for a Southern address
Settling in one of JSU's five states brings you inside the group it considers for the NP tracks, while the admission decision stays with JSU. All five belong to the compact. Alabama's board adds that an out-of-state multistate license stops being enough there once Alabama is where you primarily live. JSU's own license wording is on the RN license page.
Enrolled graduate students sign an out-of-state residence statement, and a later change of state, employer or planned clinical location needs approval, with progression not assured. Questions JSU students ask
Is JSU's FNP track open to someone living in Boise?
Not while Idaho is home. JSU considers only residents of its five named Southern states for the BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks. Relocating to one of them puts you in the group it reviews, though acceptance is still JSU's call. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN have no posted state list, so ask the School of Nursing before applying.
Does Idaho require JSU to get approval before a clinical there?
Our research found no Idaho rule aimed at clinical placements by schools based in other states. The Board's approval rules cover programs delivered inside Idaho, and its website tells outside schools to write in for requirements. That inquiry belongs to JSU's School of Nursing, and it is worth settling before an Idaho site is chosen.
Who can precept a graduate nursing student in Idaho?
Idaho's 2024 education policy wants every nursing student's preceptor licensed at the student's target level or higher. JSU does not publish its own preceptor qualifications for NP or DNP courses, so course faculty judge fit. How does NP practice in Idaho compare with Alabama?
AANP rates Idaho full practice. Alabama, home to JSU, is rated reduced: an NP there practices in collaboration with a physician, under rules the state's nursing and medical boards write together. If you move south for JSU's NP track and later return to Idaho, expect the two settings to feel quite different.
