Iowa residents weighing JSU's nursing programs
Jax State reviews nurse practitioner applicants from five Southern states, so an Iowan cannot enter the FNP or AGACNP track without moving. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN are questions to take to the School of Nursing. If one of those works out, Iowa lays out several duties for programs based elsewhere, set out below.

Iowa nurses: the quick answer
Residents of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee are the only applicants JSU weighs for its two NP tracks. Neither the Post-Master's DNP nor the Population Health MSN comes with a published state list; JSU simply asks anyone outside Alabama to write before applying. What Iowa expects of programs based in other states
Iowa's board, part of the state's Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing department, does not approve schools headquartered elsewhere. Its page for those schools still lists what they owe Iowa once their students train there.

For a working RN, the license question is simple: an active license, Iowa-issued or multistate, plus practice that follows Iowa Code. Iowa's student exemption is written for people with no nursing license at all, so it does not reach you. Preceptors get the nod from both the school and the facility. Whether JSU holds Iowa College Aid authorization fell outside our research, so ask the School of Nursing.
ARNP preceptors and Iowa's credit for teaching
Iowa's title for a nurse practitioner is ARNP. Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule steers most of a student's time toward a preceptor, ARNP or physician, practicing in the student's own role and population. Licensure has to be good in the preceptor's own state, and the written agreement comes up for review every year. Iowa nurses who precept can also bank 6 contact hours toward renewal once they log 60 or more preceptorship hours with a student, with the school's paperwork as proof.
AANP ranks Iowa as full practice. Iowa has held compact membership since January 2018, and the APRN Compact is not in effect there.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City
Greater Des Moines leads the state at roughly 759,000 residents in 2025; Cedar Rapids ranks second and Iowa City third, and about 175,000 Iowans live in the Quad Cities metro. Large Iowa systems include MercyOne, plus University of Iowa Health Care and UnityPoint Health, named as examples.
What changes if you relocate to JSU's region
Living in any of the five states makes you eligible for consideration in the NP tracks; admission itself is JSU's decision. Iowa and all five are compact members, but Alabama's board expects an Alabama license once Alabama is your primary home. JSU's RN license wording differs between its web pages and catalog, as the RN license page explains.

Questions JSU students ask
Could I study JSU's Family Nurse Practitioner track from Des Moines?
Not while Iowa is home. The BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks accept applications only from residents of JSU's five named Southern states. Moving to one of those states would put you among the people it reviews, with the decision still resting with JSU. For the Post-Master's DNP or MSN, a note to the School of Nursing comes first.
Does Iowa's board sign off on JSU's programs?
No, Iowa's board approves no schools from other states. It does attach conditions: authorization from Iowa College Aid, adherence to Iowa law, data on request, faculty and preceptors licensed in Iowa or through the compact, and detailed clinical contracts. JSU's status with Iowa College Aid was not checked in our research, so confirm it with the School of Nursing.
Can an Iowa preceptor earn renewal credit for teaching?
Yes. Iowa hands out 6 contact hours toward renewal to a nurse who precepts a student for 60 hours or more within an organized preceptorship, once the supervising school documents it. It is a modest but real benefit to mention when a clinician is considering a student.
Can I train in Iowa on the license I already hold?
If it is active and either Iowa-issued or multistate, yes. Iowa expects RNs doing graduate clinicals in the state to hold one of those two and to follow Iowa Code while they train. Iowa's exemption for students covers only people with no nursing license, so it does not apply to a working RN.
