Illinois residents and JSU's nursing programs
Illinois is missing from the short list of states whose residents JSU weighs for its nurse practitioner tracks, and Illinois nurses hold a license that works in Illinois alone, since the state never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact. That pairing makes licensing the first thing to sort out, whether you stay put or relocate. JSU's Post-Master's DNP and MSN remain worth an inquiry to the School of Nursing.

The short answer for Illinois
Applications to the Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care tracks come only from people who live in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee; the exact line is on the five-state rule page. For the others, JSU asks non-Alabama residents to contact the School of Nursing before applying.

Illinois sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact
Illinois never signed the compact, and nothing on NCSBN's tracking map points to a change soon. In practice, an Iowa or Indiana multistate card does nothing for you at an Illinois bedside: clinical hours there run on an Illinois RN license.
AANP shades Illinois as reduced practice. Depending on the setting, an Illinois NP works under a written collaborative agreement with a physician or meets added experience and education benchmarks instead, and certain Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines still call for a consulting relationship.
The filing Illinois asks of programs based elsewhere
Before a school from another state sends students into Illinois clinical settings, IDFPR's rules expect a five-part packet from it. A green light holds for two years, can be extended, and brings an annual report, and any of the school's faculty teaching in Illinois need Illinois RN licenses. What the rule leaves open is scope: it is written into the RN program section, with no word on whether an MSN or DNP program is covered, so JSU would settle that with the state.

Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and the care landscape
Chicagoland dominates: the Illinois part of the Chicago metro held over 8.7 million residents in 2025. Illinois also claims a slice of the St. Louis metro, plus Peoria and Rockford. Systems such as OSF HealthCare, Northwestern Medicine and Endeavor Health, along with UChicago Medicine and Advocate Health Care, serve these areas, named as examples only.
Illinois preceptors get a sweetener, too. An APRN who takes one APRN student for an academic term, semester or quarter, may log 10 CE hours toward renewal, capped at 30 per cycle, on paperwork from the student's school.
Heading south: license and program changes
A move to one of JSU's five states puts you among the residents it considers for the NP tracks; JSU still makes the admission call. All five are compact members while Illinois is not, so the license you practice on will change with your address, and that step belongs with the new state's board. JSU words its RN license requirement differently in different places, as the license requirements page explains.
Enrolled students report any change of state or planned clinical location to JSU for approval.

Questions JSU students ask
Will JSU consider me for the FNP track if I live in Chicago?
Not while Illinois is your state of residence. JSU reviews FNP and AGACNP applicants from its five named Southern states and no others. Moving to one of them would make you eligible for consideration, not a seat. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN have no state list, and JSU would like to hear from you before you submit anything.
Could I use my Indiana or Iowa compact license for Illinois clinicals?
No. Illinois never joined the compact, so a multistate card from a neighboring state has no standing there. Any clinical hours at an Illinois facility require an Illinois RN license, and Illinois rules also want your preceptor licensed in whatever state the teaching happens.
Does Illinois approve out-of-state graduate nursing programs?
Illinois asks programs based elsewhere for a five-part filing before placing students in the state, with approval good for two years. The rule appears among the RN program provisions and does not say whether graduate programs are covered. JSU's School of Nursing is the right office to confirm how it would apply to a residency or practicum in Illinois.
What do Illinois preceptors gain from teaching a student?
Renewal credit. Illinois lets an APRN claim 10 CE hours for each APRN student precepted over a full semester or quarter, up to 30 in one renewal cycle, with the school supplying the documentation. It is worth raising when a clinician weighs taking on a student.
