Key 2026-27 dates for full-semester courses
These dates come from JSU's registrar for the full terms, which is where nursing courses sit. JSU lists all times in Central Time.

The last day to drop a class or withdraw in the full Fall 2026 term is November 11. Spring 2027 classes end April 20, with spring break March 22 to 26 and commencement listed for April 29 and 30. Summer commencement is July 30. As of late September 2026, the registrar had not yet posted drop and withdrawal deadlines for Spring or Summer 2027.

Full semesters, not sub-terms
JSU splits each semester into several parts. Fall and spring each have A and B halves and Block 1 and Block 2; summer has a full term plus Summer I, a four-week session and Summer II. Fall B, for example, starts October 12, and Spring B starts March 1.
Every nursing plan of study and catalog term note uses whole semesters, and no nursing course has been found on an A, B or block schedule. Plan your practicum hours across the full term, from the first day of classes to the end of finals.
JSU's own nursing pages describe the terms in looser words. The MSN pages give fall as August to December, spring as January to April and summer as May to August, while the NP timeline calls spring January to May. For exact start and end dates, the registrar's calendar governs.
How each practicum sits in the year
JSU's NP practicums each fill one full semester: Practicum I in spring, II in summer, III in fall and IV in the following spring. In 2027, a spring practicum runs from January 6 to the end of finals on April 27. Whether hours continue over spring break is a question for your course faculty.
Summer is the tight one. The second practicum, 210 hours in both tracks, has to fit inside the full summer term, May 6 to July 29, 2027, which is about twelve weeks. Spread evenly, that is roughly 17 to 18 hours a week; that figure is our arithmetic, not JSU's. The FNP practicum guide covers the course itself.
Other clinical courses follow the same full-term pattern. The MSN population health practicums split across the year, NU 5980 in summer only and NU 5985 in fall only. In the DNP residency year, project work at the site begins each January and lasts eight to ten weeks, with results presented in July and Dissemination Day on campus the same month.
Registration dates that affect clinical planning
Priority registration for graduate and doctoral students opens October 26, 2026 for Spring 2027 and March 8, 2027 for Summer 2027. Registration happens in MyJaxState, and Canvas courses open on the first day of each semester.
Registration can be held up by compliance. JSU's graduate handbook warns that students may be prevented from registering if required CastleBranch documents are missing by the due date, so check your tracker well before priority registration. The CastleBranch guide lists what goes in it.
When you build a practicum term's schedule, check that the practicum and its paired lecture courses sit in it together, since JSU treats them as corequisites and requires them to be retaken together if either is not passed.
If you plan to graduate, note the application deadlines: January 12 for Spring 2027 and May 7 for Summer 2027.
Withdrawing from a clinical course
JSU lets students withdraw without academic penalty until the published last day to withdraw, and processes no withdrawals after it. JSU's nursing handbook asks you to seek advisement from the program coordinator or lead faculty before withdrawing from any course.
For NP students, a withdrawal has a second edge. Practicums and their lecture courses are corequisites, and each runs once a year, so dropping one course can change the whole plan of study. The grades and progression guide explains the paired-course rule.
JSU's hardship withdrawal normally covers every course in a term, but the catalog carves out a clinical exception. A student in a clinical course who can no longer meet its essential requirements, for example after an injury, may hardship withdraw from that course and stay enrolled in the others. Requests go to the Vice President for Student Affairs with documentation, and a retroactive request is due within 60 days after the term ends.
Incompletes and leaves of absence
An incomplete is available only when extraordinary circumstances stop you from finishing and you are passing after the last day to withdraw. You file an Incomplete Grade Completion Plan, and the work must be finished within the next major semester, fall or spring. An Incomplete Grade Extension Request needs the instructor, the department head and the Graduate Dean. In nursing, an unresolved incomplete blocks registration for the next term.
When an incomplete does not fit, a No Credit grade may be possible for a student who is otherwise passing but cannot finish because of circumstances outside their control. It needs the Graduate Dean and cannot be assigned retroactively.
A leave of absence lasts at least one semester and no more than three, and each student gets one per program. JSU will not reinstate a student for a semester once that semester's registration deadline has passed.

Whatever help JSU gives with your placement, we work back from these dates so your preceptor and site are ready before the term opens. For a summer practicum, we look for a preceptor with enough clinic days to fit 210 hours into twelve weeks; for a residency, one who can stay from late May through July of the following year.
Credential checks, contract details and your compliance status are sorted before the first day of term, not during it, and no site hears from us until your malpractice approval is in hand.
