What Kansas residents should know about JSU nursing
Kansas residents cannot apply to JSU's nurse practitioner tracks, which draw on five Southern states. For the Post-Master's DNP and MSN, which list no states, JSU wants to hear from you before you apply. Kansas does not screen online APRN programs from other states when you enroll; its scrutiny arrives later, when a graduate asks for a Kansas license.

While you live in Kansas, JSU's two BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks are off the table, since JSU fills them from Alabama and the four states that border it: Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. KSBN checks the program when you seek a Kansas license
KSBN's position is plain: an online APRN program based outside Kansas needs no Board approval before a Kansan signs up. The program gets examined instead once its graduate files for Kansas APRN licensure. At that stage the Board looks for a nationally accredited program of 45 credits or more, with the three advanced core courses (pharmacology, health assessment, pathophysiology) at 3 credits apiece. It also counts role-specialty clinical hours; the minimum climbed from 500 to 750 for students whose admission came after March 1, 2025.
JSU's NP hour figures conflict between its catalog, web pages and course lists, so anyone who may practice in Kansas later should read the BSN-DNP hours page and confirm the count with faculty.
Precepting and supervision inside Kansas
Under KSBN's guidance for APRN clinicals held in Kansas, the preceptor should go through orientation first, put their name to a written agreement, and hold Kansas APRN licensure in the very role the student is training for. Students train on whatever RN license Kansas honors, single-state or multistate. Faculty get more room: online instructors need no Kansas license, site visits are optional, and an instructor who does drop by is treated as a visitor, not a practicing nurse.
Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka
Kansas City's metro straddles the state line, and roughly 938,000 of its residents lived on the Kansas side in 2025; Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan follow. Examples of providers: The University of Kansas Health System; Stormont Vail Health; Wesley Healthcare, an HCA hospital in Wichita; and Ascension Via Christi. Kansas entered the compact in mid-2019 and is rated full practice by AANP, while the APRN Compact is not active there.
Relocating to Alabama or a neighboring state
A move to any of the five puts an NP application within JSU's reach, though acceptance is never automatic. Kansas and all five share the compact; Alabama, though, asks for its own license from nurses whose primary residence is Alabama, as our Alabama guide explains. Current students clear a change of home state or clinical plans with JSU before it happens.

Is the JSU FNP track an option for a Wichita nurse?
No, not from Kansas. JSU takes FNP and AGACNP applications only from Alabama and the four states that border it. Relocating to one of them would put you in the applicant pool, and JSU would still decide. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN carry no state list, so a message to the School of Nursing is the right opening move.
Will KSBN vet an out-of-state online APRN program before I enroll?
No. Kansas sets no advance approval step for these programs. The look comes later, when one of its graduates seeks APRN licensure in Kansas, and it covers accreditation, total credits, the three advanced core courses and a minimum number of role-specialty clinical hours that depends on your admission date.
What makes someone eligible to precept in Kansas?
Kansas APRN licensure in the student's own role is the core requirement, followed by orientation and a written agreement, and only Kansas-licensed APRNs may clinically supervise APRN students there. Final approval of any preceptor rests with JSU's faculty, and the credential file we send them is complete.
Can I do Kansas clinicals on a multistate license?
On the RN side, yes. Kansas nurses have held compact licenses since 2019, and KSBN treats an APRN student as practicing on any RN license Kansas accepts, whether that is a multistate card or a Kansas-only license. The APRN Compact has not taken effect in Kansas, so advanced practice licensure stays state-issued.
