Louisiana nurses and Jax State: options, rules, next steps
Louisiana shares a border with Mississippi, and that border matters: Mississippi residents can apply to JSU's nurse practitioner tracks, while Louisiana residents cannot. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN begin with a message to the School of Nursing. Louisiana also runs a formal approval process for programs controlled from other states, laid out below.

What a Louisiana address means at JSU
JSU opens its FNP and AGACNP tracks to applicants whose homes are in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee, which closes them to Louisiana. The rest of JSU's graduate programs post no state list, and the school asks residents outside Alabama to get in touch first. The five-state rule page has JSU's wording.

Louisiana's six-month approval rule
Louisiana does not let an outside school simply show up. Under the Board's rule, any nursing program, undergraduate or graduate, run from another state must secure LSBN approval before it teaches a course or places a student in Louisiana. The paperwork is due half a year before the start date, and an approval can last as long as three years before the school petitions to renew. The Board's program list blocked our research, so JSU's standing in Louisiana is unconfirmed.
What goes into the request
- A letter naming each clinical agency and unit
- Curriculum, syllabi and the school catalog
- A survey form for every clinical facility, plus faculty qualification forms
- NCLEX and certification pass rates
- Evidence of home-state approval and of both regional and Board-recognized national accreditation
Faculty, oversight and paperwork during a Louisiana clinical
Faculty from an outside program who teach in Louisiana must be Louisiana-licensed as an RN, an APRN or both, hold graduate nursing preparation and bring at least two years of clinical experience. When a preceptor is involved, faculty check in with preceptor and student weekly and get to the site once a term or more. Board-approved APRN preceptorships cap faculty coverage at nine students per clinical day, and a graduate student's clinical experience spreadsheet goes to the Board within two weeks of starting.
Licensing, practice and the Louisiana market
Compact membership came to Louisiana in mid-2019; the APRN Compact has not. AANP calls Louisiana reduced practice, meaning some part of every NP's work sits under a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician, a setup Alabama nurses will recognize.
Greater New Orleans, near 971,000 residents in 2025, and Baton Rouge, near 889,000, lead the metro list, followed by Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City. Willis-Knighton Health, Baton Rouge General, FMOL Health, LCMC Health and Ochsner Health are among the state's systems, mentioned only as examples.
Across the border: moving to Mississippi
Mississippi borders Louisiana to the east and is one of JSU's five NP states, so a move there brings you inside the group JSU considers, with admission still its call. Mississippi has a wrinkle: it hands review of out-of-state graduate programs with in-state clinicals to its university governing board, IHL, rather than to nursing regulators, and IHL's reviewed-programs list from August 20, 2026 leaves JSU off. Both states belong to the compact. If you are already enrolled when you move, JSU needs to approve the change before your clinical plans shift.

Questions JSU students ask
Can I join JSU's FNP track from New Orleans?
Not from a Louisiana address. The FNP track, like the AGACNP track, is limited to residents of five Southern states, Mississippi among them. Crossing into Mississippi would qualify you for JSU's review, not for automatic admission. Separately, the Post-Master's DNP and MSN post no state list, and JSU asks applicants from other states to reach the School of Nursing before applying.
Does Louisiana require approval for graduate clinicals from an out-of-state school?
Yes. Louisiana's rule reaches graduate programs as well as undergraduate ones whenever the school is controlled from another state. The program asks LSBN for approval half a year ahead, sending its curriculum, syllabi, facility and faculty forms and exam pass rates. Our research could not confirm whether JSU holds Louisiana approval, so ask the School of Nursing.
Is Louisiana part of the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Yes, since July 2019. A multistate RN license issued in Louisiana travels to other compact states, JSU's five NP states included. The APRN Compact is not active in Louisiana, so NP licensure stays state by state. Practical nurses in Louisiana answer to a separate board.
What should I check before moving to Mississippi for JSU?
Mississippi's IHL board reviews outside graduate nursing programs that place students in Mississippi clinicals and wants requests at least four months ahead. JSU is missing from the IHL list of reviewed programs posted in August 2026. Ask JSU how it handles Mississippi clinicals before you plan a local practicum.
