Mississippi residents and JSU's NP tracks: the IHL question
JSU weighs applications from Mississippi residents for both nurse practitioner tracks, FNP and AGACNP, yet Mississippi sets its own route for nursing schools based elsewhere. It gives their review to IHL, its higher education governing board, and JSU is missing from IHL's most recent list of reviewed programs. Here is what that means and whom to ask.

JSU programs and Mississippi applicants
Mississippi made JSU's list of five states for the BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks. The MSN, certificate, RN-BSN and Post-Master's DNP programs come with no state list, and JSU wants anyone living beyond Alabama to talk with the School of Nursing before applying.

JSU's NP disclosure, last dated October 15, 2021, confirms Alabama and leaves Mississippi, like every other state, undetermined; the disclosure guide explains the wording. Consideration for admission is not an offer of a seat.
Why IHL, not the nursing board, holds the key
Mississippi splits nursing oversight in two. LPN programs are the nursing board's to approve, while RN-level and graduate programs answer to IHL standards. Any nursing school from elsewhere, undergraduate or graduate, that trains students in Mississippi is held to the same standards as Mississippi's own schools.
IHL views in-state clinicals as the school having a physical presence in Mississippi, and that triggers a review by IHL Nursing Education. IHL budgets up to three months to finish, and its 2024 procedures manual tells schools controlled from elsewhere to request review a full four months or more before students arrive. On top of that, the school needs either SARA membership or a separate distance-education authorization through MCCA.
Students carry a license requirement too: IHL wants every post-licensure student in an APRN clinical course to hold an unencumbered RN license good for the state hosting those clinicals; the RN license guide covers JSU's own wording.
Where JSU fits on IHL's list
IHL posts a document titled Out-of-State Programs Reviewed, naming outside nursing programs it has looked at for clinicals in Mississippi. The edition dated August 20, 2026 leaves JSU off. JSU does participate in NC-SARA, which answers the SARA part of IHL's expectations, but how JSU handles the review requirement for Mississippi sites is not published.
Before you plan a practicum in Jackson, Hattiesburg or on the Coast, ask your track's clinical coordinator (FNP, ANP or DNP) how JSU approaches Mississippi sites, and check IHL's current list. Starting a semester or more before Practicum I leaves room for a four-month review request if one is needed.
Some Mississippi residents near the state line weigh a site across the border in Alabama, where JSU is a home program and the Alabama Board's out-of-state steps play no part. Moving your clinical plans across a state line is a change JSU must approve, so raise it early; the admission states guide covers the five-state picture.
IHL's review can run three months and it wants requests four months out: settle JSU's approach to Mississippi sites before you commit to one.
Collaboration, compact licenses and Mississippi's metros
Your RN license travels well from Mississippi, a compact member since January 2018; the APRN version of the compact is another matter, with no Mississippi enactment yet. The state's Board of Nursing adds that a compact nurse in good standing can practice in fellow member states, and employers cannot make that nurse get a remote-state license on top.
On practice authority, AANP's rating for Mississippi is reduced. A Mississippi NP collaborates with an in-state physician or dentist in a relationship the board has signed off on, and your preceptor teaches from within it. Campus trips and the 16-month residency
Campus visits are part of JSU's online model: orientation, on-site simulation and the summer Dissemination Day, with immersion dates unpublished. From Jackson or the Gulf Coast, a day in Jacksonville, Alabama is a cross-state trip. The residency adds its own clock: pairing happens in late May, per JSU's DNP timeline, and the same preceptor and site stay with you for 16 months, so a Mississippi residency site needs the IHL question settled well before May; see the residency pairing guide.

Is JSU on Mississippi's IHL list of reviewed out-of-state programs?
JSU is missing from the edition dated August 20, 2026. That list covers outside nursing programs IHL has reviewed for clinicals in Mississippi. JSU has not published how it handles Mississippi clinicals, so check IHL's current version and ask JSU's clinical coordinators before you commit to a Mississippi site.
How long does an IHL review take?
IHL says its review of a school based elsewhere can last up to three months, and its procedures manual asks such schools to file at least four months before clinicals begin. JSU, as the school, would be the one to file, so raise the timing with JSU well before your first practicum.
Does the Mississippi Board of Nursing approve NP programs?
Only practical nursing programs go through the Mississippi Board of Nursing for approval. Programs at the RN level and above, graduate and NP programs included, are held to IHL's standards, and IHL is also the body that reviews schools from other states that train students in Mississippi.
Can I use a Mississippi RN license for JSU clinicals in Alabama?
Mississippi and Alabama are both compact members, so a multistate license issued to a Mississippi resident is valid for RN practice in Alabama too. JSU's catalog wording ties your license to the state where you do clinicals, so confirm with JSU that a multistate license satisfies it, and get approval for the change of clinical location.
