Michigan residents and Jax State's nursing programs
If you live in Michigan, JSU's FNP and AGACNP tracks are off the table, because Jax State weighs NP applications from five Southeastern states only. The Post-Master's DNP and the Population Health MSN have no published state list, and JSU wants a word with non-Alabama applicants before they apply. Michigan adds no known approval step for outside schools, but it stands apart from the compact.

The short answer for Michigan nurses
The limit comes from a note on JSU's graduate nursing page about state approval of online programs. It names the five states for the NP tracks and tells anyone interested in the RN-BSN, MSN or Post-Master's DNP to contact the School of Nursing. Ask directly whether a residency or practicum could run in Michigan.
On the NP licensure disclosure JSU last updated October 15, 2021, Michigan is listed as not yet determined, which is how it lists every state except Alabama. The five-state rule page covers the note's wording and history.

Licensing and practice under Michigan rules
Michigan remains a non-member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. A bill, HB 4246, is pending according to NCSBN's map, so a license issued there covers Michigan alone. Anyone seeking a Michigan RN license first clears a criminal background check and two training requirements: a single session on recognizing human trafficking and, within five years of issue, two hours on implicit bias.
The school-approval rules in the Michigan Administrative Code (R 338.10301 onward) concern programs physically based in Michigan. No rule or guidance turned up that asks an out-of-state school for approval or notice before a Michigan clinical placement. For licensure, Michigan recognizes schools elsewhere through national accreditation such as CCNE, which JSU holds; see JSU's accreditation.
AANP classes Michigan as restricted, since controlled-substance prescribing by NPs requires a physician to delegate that authority. Michigan also layers NP status on top of its RN license as a specialty certification, issued once the nurse presents national certification the Board accepts.
Systems, cities and preceptor support
Roughly 4.39 million people lived in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro in 2025, per census estimates; Grand Rapids had close to 1.18 million, with the Lansing area at roughly 480,000 and Flint's at about 401,000. Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, Trinity Health Michigan, University of Michigan Health and McLaren Health Care are examples of the state's systems.
A preceptor pilot from MDHHS's Office of Nursing Programs, limited to one Michigan university's NP students, is listed as completed, and official sources show no Michigan tax credit for preceptors.
Trading a Michigan address for a JSU state
A new home in JSU's five-state region is what opens the NP tracks to consideration; it does not decide admission. It would also move you into the compact, since all five are members, and you would license in your new home state. The practice climate will feel familiar: AANP rates Florida, Georgia and Tennessee restricted like Michigan, and Alabama and Mississippi reduced. Questions JSU students ask
Is Jacksonville State's online FNP program open to Michigan residents?
No. JSU's FNP and AGACNP tracks consider only residents of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. A Michigan nurse who moves to one of them can apply from there, and JSU's admission review decides. Other JSU programs start with a note to the School of Nursing.
Does Michigan require an out-of-state school to register clinical placements?
No such requirement surfaced in official Michigan sources. The Board's program rules cover schools inside Michigan, and out-of-state programs come into view mainly at licensure, through national accreditation. JSU still decides whether it can offer a Michigan resident its DNP or MSN, so the School of Nursing should hear from you first.
What should a Michigan NP preceptor hold?
A Michigan NP preceptor should show a current Michigan RN license plus the state's NP specialty certification, which Michigan grants only to nurses already nationally certified by a body its Board accepts. JSU has not posted full preceptor standards for its NP courses; our preceptor requirements guide covers the published pieces.
Can I keep my Michigan RN license if I move to Alabama?
You can keep it, but it will not cover work in Alabama, since Michigan is outside the compact. Once Alabama is home, you would apply for an Alabama license; as a compact state, Alabama issues multistate licenses to qualifying residents.
