Weighing Jax State from Missouri
Missouri already shares two traits with JSU's five NP states: it belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, and AANP rates its NP practice below full, as it does theirs. Residency is the dividing line. Jax State's FNP and AGACNP tracks take applicants from those five states alone, so a Missouri address points you to the School of Nursing with questions about JSU's other graduate options, the Post-Master's DNP and the Population Health MSN.

The residency line JSU draws
JSU states the limit in a note on its graduate nursing page, and archived copies show it since 2020. The note sends prospective RN-BSN, MSN and Post-Master's DNP students to a School of Nursing contact, and JSU's DNP pages add that some programs may be unavailable in some states.
JSU's 2021 licensure disclosure gives Missouri the same mark as 48 other states and DC: not yet determined. That disclosure, unpacked on our licensure disclosure page, covers only the two NP tracks.

How Missouri treats a student from elsewhere
Picture a JSU residency placed in Springfield or Columbia. Research found no Missouri Board of Nursing rule or guidance asking an outside program for permission or notice first. The Board's education chapter (20 CSR 2200-2) deals with schools it approves itself, and it defines approved as recognized by the Board.
The student exemption is where things blur. Missouri excuses supervised practice from licensure for people enrolled in approved schools of professional or practical nursing (RSMo 335.081(6)(a)), but the text never says whether a school in Alabama counts. Nobody put the question to the Board during research, so it belongs with the Board and JSU before any plan firms up.
Compact license, collaborative practice
Missouri's compact membership traces to RSMo 335.360, in force since mid-2017, with NCSBN dating implementation to January 2018. AANP calls Missouri restricted. An NP there stays in a physician collaborative practice arrangement for the whole of a career, and that arrangement caps ratios, requires chart review and limits controlled substances. A state preceptor credit exists, RSMo 135.690, yet only physicians and PAs licensed in Missouri, teaching the state's own medical and PA students, can claim it; NPs are left off.
Census estimates for 2025 put the Missouri side of metro St. Louis at roughly 2.14 million people, and Kansas City's Missouri share adds another 1.33 million. Springfield, near half a million, and Columbia, just over 200,000, come next. Mercy and BJC HealthCare, along with CoxHealth, SSM Health and MU Health Care, are examples of the systems.
Crossing into Tennessee or farther south
Making Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida or Mississippi your home puts you in the pool JSU considers for its NP tracks; admission stays JSU's call. Your multistate license moves with the compact's rules, which tie it to your primary state of residence, so you would license in the new state. Questions JSU students ask
Could I start JSU's AGACNP track from St. Louis?
Only after making one of JSU's five eligible states your residence. JSU's graduate page limits NP track consideration to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. Live there first, then apply; JSU's admissions process makes the decision. For the Post-Master's DNP or MSN, the School of Nursing is the first contact.
Does my Missouri multistate license work in Tennessee or Alabama?
While Missouri stays your primary residence, other compact states honor your Missouri multistate license; Alabama's Board accepts one in place of its own license until Alabama becomes home. Moving for good changes your primary state, and then you license there. JSU phrases its own license rule two ways; see RN license requirements.
Can an NP who precepts me claim Missouri's preceptor tax credit?
No. The credit in RSMo 135.690 belongs to Missouri-licensed physicians and PAs, and the rotations it counts involve Missouri's medical and PA learners. The statute gives nurse practitioners and nursing students no place in it, regardless of which school the student attends.
Is JSU's Post-Master's DNP open to Missouri residents?
There is no JSU state list for this program. The graduate page directs prospective Post-Master's DNP applicants to the School of Nursing, while the DNP pages warn that not every program reaches every state.
