Montana residents and the Jax State nursing programs
Jax State reads FNP and AGACNP applications from five Southeastern states only, so Montana residents are outside that pool. JSU's Post-Master's DNP and Population Health MSN list no states, and the School of Nursing asks non-Alabama applicants to get in touch before applying. Montana's Board sets graduate students apart
Prelicensure schools from elsewhere face paperwork under ARM 24.159.608 before any Montana placement. Their program director signs a written request carrying board-approval and accreditation evidence, details on preceptors and faculty, a plan for faculty oversight, the agreement with the facility, and a check with in-state program directors confirming no Montana nursing student gets displaced.
Graduate study sits outside that gate. RN-to-BSN and graduate programs, the Board's FAQ explains, need no Board sign-off to run clinicals in Montana. The one thing the Board stresses is licensure: Montana patients are involved, so the school is responsible for checking that the student's license is current and covers Montana practice.
License, practice and faculty rules
Compact membership dates to January 2018 in NCSBN's table. According to the Board's RN licensing page, a nurse whose multistate privilege comes from another member state works in Montana with no Montana license, which, for a student licensed in a compact state, settles the license expectation.
Faculty face a modest rule too. The FAQ ties a Montana license for visiting instructors to hands-on patient care, while those who only consult are not covered. Montana NPs have full practice in AANP's ratings, and no state incentive for preceptors appeared in official sources.
Montana's health systems and small metros
Montana's metros are small by national standards. Billings led in 2025 census estimates at about 194,000, with Bozeman and Missoula near 129,000 each and Helena near 97,000. Examples of systems include the joint Billings Clinic-Logan Health organization, St. Patrick Hospital (Providence) in Missoula, Benefis Health System, and Intermountain Health's St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings.
What moving to Alabama or a neighbor would change
Only a permanent relocation into JSU's five-state area opens NP track consideration; the admission decision itself stays with JSU. Since Montana and all five states are compact members, the license shift is familiar: you would license in your new primary state of residence and keep multistate privileges. The bigger change is practice scope, since AANP rates Alabama and Mississippi reduced and Florida, Georgia and Tennessee restricted, against Montana's full practice. Questions JSU students ask
Can I take JSU's online FNP track while living in Billings?
Not with a Montana address. JSU's graduate nursing page reserves NP track consideration for people living in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee. Relocate first, and you apply from the new state, with JSU's admissions process making the call. For the DNP or MSN, Billings nurses should ask the School of Nursing first.
Does a graduate residency in Montana need Board of Nursing approval?
According to the Montana Board's FAQ, graduate nursing programs from other states run Montana clinicals without Board approval; the formal request under ARM 24.159.608 applies to prelicensure programs. You would still need an active license good in Montana. Whether JSU offers its DNP to a Montana resident rests with the School of Nursing.
Would a JSU instructor supervising me need Montana licensure?
Per the Board's FAQ, visiting faculty need Montana licensure when they personally provide patient care there. A JSU instructor consulting with you and your preceptor at a distance, hands off the patients, falls outside that. Your Montana preceptor, naturally, must be licensed to practice in the state.
Does my Montana multistate license work in Alabama?
While Montana is your primary residence, yes: the Alabama Board lets a nurse work there on a multistate license issued by another compact state, Montana included, until Alabama becomes that nurse's home. JSU's own RN license rule is worded two ways, so check the RN license guide before planning around it.
