Studying with JSU from New Jersey: what is open and what waits
JSU reserves application consideration for its FNP and AGACNP tracks to people living in five Southeastern states, Alabama and its neighbors Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee, so a New Jersey home keeps both closed. The DNP for master's-prepared nurses and the MSN in Population Health list no states; there, the School of Nursing asks to hear from you before you apply. New Jersey's own code turned up no Board approval step for outside programs.

New Jersey is marked not yet determined on JSU's NP licensure disclosure, which still carries its October 15, 2021 date and gives that mark to all states but Alabama. JSU is also an NC-SARA participant, part of the interstate agreement on distance education. The licensure disclosure page explains both.
New Jersey's Board and outside programs
New Jersey's Board of Nursing belongs to the state's consumer affairs division. The education chapter it administers, N.J.A.C. 13:37, sets out how it accredits schools licensed through the state's higher-education commission, and its lone clause on clinical agencies, 13:37-1.10(c), speaks to New Jersey schools sending students into other states, not outside schools coming in.
So the code as reviewed asks nothing of an out-of-state program by way of approval or advance notice. The Board's own website met the research check with a security screen, though, leaving anything posted there unread. Before a New Jersey practicum or residency, ask the School of Nursing and the host site what each wants on paper.
Practice rules, the compact and the systems here
New Jersey lands in AANP's reduced practice group: prescribing drugs and devices requires an NP to keep joint protocols with a physician collaborator. The state entered the compact in 2021, so a New Jersey multistate RN license already reaches Alabama and the other member states while New Jersey remains home.
Two very large metros dominate. New Jersey's piece of the New York-Newark-Jersey City region tops 7.1 million people in 2025 census estimates, about 1.4 million more live in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington area's New Jersey counties, and Atlantic City-Hammonton (roughly 372,000) and Trenton-Princeton (roughly 399,000) follow. RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health are two large names; Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care widen the list of example systems.
What changes if you head south
Moving to one of JSU's five states is the one route into the NP tracks. Living there places you among the applicants JSU will weigh, and JSU's admissions review still decides; the five-state rule page covers the wording.
Licensing comes next. The compact issues your license through whichever state is your main home, so you would apply in the new one, and all five are compact members. JSU words its own RN license rule in two ways, laid out on the RN license page.

Questions JSU students ask
Can I take JSU's online FNP program from Newark or Jersey City?
Not from a New Jersey address. The FNP and AGACNP tracks take applications for consideration only from people who reside in the five Southeastern states on JSU's list. Establish residency in one of them and you could apply; the decision itself rests with JSU.
Must JSU get New Jersey approval before I train at a site there?
The administrative code reviewed speaks to New Jersey's own schools and puts no approval or advance-notice duty on outside programs. The Board's website could not be reviewed, however, so treat that finding as provisional and check with the School of Nursing and your host site before committing to a New Jersey placement.
Does a New Jersey RN license satisfy JSU's license requirement?
JSU wants a current, unencumbered RN license but words it two ways: its program web pages point to U.S. licensure generally, and the 2026-27 catalog's DNP entries point to the state where you practice clinically now. A New Jersey multistate license reaches other compact states while you live in New Jersey. Ask the School of Nursing which wording applies.
Is JSU's MSN in Population Health open to New Jersey residents?
JSU prints no state list for the MSN; its pages ask anyone living outside Alabama to reach out to the School of Nursing first. Expect online coursework plus two 254-hour practicums, NU 5980 each summer and NU 5985 each fall; the MSN Population Health page has the details.
