North Carolina residents and Jax State nursing
North Carolina sits just outside JSU's NP circle. Its neighbors Tennessee and Georgia are two of the five states whose residents JSU will consider for the FNP and AGACNP tracks, but North Carolinians are not. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN in Population Health have no printed state list, so those begin with the School of Nursing, and North Carolina's nursing board stays out of approving graduate programs altogether.

On JSU's 2021 NP licensure disclosure, North Carolina reads not yet determined, the same entry as every state apart from Alabama.

For a JSU nurse, the middle rows carry the weight. The MSN and the Post-Master's DNP come after RN licensure, so a Board approval step is not the hurdle; your license is. Holding a North Carolina or multistate license answers NCBON's question, and anyone licensed some other way should ask the Licensure Department before planning hours. JSU belongs to NC-SARA.
Restricted practice, the compact and the state's systems
AANP counts North Carolina among its restricted states. North Carolina NPs stay tied to a supervising physician for their entire careers, and a joint committee of the nursing and medical boards governs their licensure. For RNs, the compact has applied since January 19, 2018.
Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia leads the population figures in the table, followed by Raleigh-Cary. Health system names a North Carolina nurse will know, from Duke Health and UNC Health to ECU Health, Novant Health and Atrium Health (Advocate Health's Charlotte system), appear here only as examples.

Across the line into Tennessee or Georgia
North Carolina borders Tennessee and Georgia, so the move that opens JSU's NP tracks can be a short one. A home in either state, or in Alabama, Florida or Mississippi, puts you among the applicants JSU weighs for FNP and AGACNP, with admission still its decision. Questions JSU students ask
Can I apply to JSU's FNP track from Charlotte or Raleigh?
Charlotte and Raleigh addresses fall outside the rule. The FNP track looks only at applicants living in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee. Moving across the line to Tennessee or Georgia would make you eligible to apply, while JSU's admissions review still weighs each file.
Does NCBON have to approve JSU for a North Carolina DNP residency?
Not by NCBON's own account, since it leaves post-licensure graduate and doctoral study outside its approval. What remains is licensure: without a North Carolina or multistate license, check with the Licensure Department before any hours in the state, and get JSU's own requirements from the School of Nursing.
If I move to Tennessee, can I still work in North Carolina?
Both states are in the compact. Once Tennessee is your primary residence you would hold a Tennessee multistate license, which lets you practice in North Carolina and other compact states without another license. Enrolled JSU students also need JSU's approval for the move.
Is the Post-Master's DNP open to North Carolina residents?
It may be. Nothing on JSU's pages rules North Carolina in or out for the Post-Master's DNP, and the School of Nursing asks to hear from you before you apply. The Post-Master's DNP page explains the three residencies and the 16-month commitment to one preceptor and site.
