What North Dakota residents should know about JSU nursing
JSU's FNP and AGACNP tracks accept applications for consideration from residents of five Southern states, and North Dakota falls outside that group. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN in Population Health carry no published state limit, so the School of Nursing is your first contact. North Dakota adds a second check: its Board of Nursing keeps a list of recognized distance programs, and JSU was not on it when checked in September 2026.

The five-state rule, seen from North Dakota
The limit follows your home address, and it has stood on JSU's graduate nursing page since at least 2020.

The 2021 NP licensure disclosure marks North Dakota not yet determined, as it does every state except Alabama; the licensure disclosure page explains it.
NDBON's recognized distance programs
North Dakota looks harder at outside programs than most states do. Its Board recognizes distance programs before they bring students into North Dakota facilities, and it counts programs ending in LPN, RN or APRN licensure, NP education included. Programs ask 60 days ahead of any student activity, then report each semester on students, facilities, courses, preceptors and faculty, and affiliation agreements, with facility-by-facility confirmation of clinical space.
State law layers on two conditions: the program's home-state board must approve it, and its students may practice as students once written notice reaches the Board and a site has space. Recognition also needs evidence that the school is in NC-SARA or authorized by North Dakota's higher-education board, and JSU belongs to NC-SARA.
JSU was absent from NDBON's Recognized Distance Programs page on September 27, 2026. The guidance centers on programs that lead to a license and does not describe RN-to-BSN study as covered, so put the question to NDBON and to the School of Nursing: how would it treat a non-NP MSN practicum or a Post-Master's DNP residency?
Licenses, practice authority and care in North Dakota
The compact has covered North Dakota RNs since January 19, 2018, and AANP counts the state as full practice.
The markets are modest, as the table shows. Sanford Health runs medical centers in both Fargo and Bismarck; Altru Health System anchors Grand Forks, Trinity Health serves Minot, and Essentia Health in Fargo and CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck add to the examples.

How a move to one of the five states changes things
A new address in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee makes you eligible for NP-track consideration, with the decision left to JSU (five-state rule). Your North Dakota multistate license would give way to one from the new state of primary residence, and JSU's catalog and web pages phrase the RN license rule differently (see the RN license page).

Questions JSU students ask
Can I study in JSU's FNP track from Fargo or Bismarck?
No. North Dakota residents sit outside the group JSU will consider for either NP track, which is limited to five Southeastern states centered on Alabama. Relocating to one of them would make you eligible to apply, and JSU would then review your application on its merits.
Does NDBON recognize JSU as a distance program?
Not as of September 27, 2026, when JSU was missing from NDBON's Recognized Distance Programs page. The recognition is meant for distance programs whose students head toward LPN, RN or APRN licensure and train in North Dakota facilities, so check with the School of Nursing and NDBON before counting on hours in the state.
Does the APRN Compact help a North Dakota NP right now?
Not yet. North Dakota has enacted it, but it takes seven enacting states to switch the compact on, and by 2026 there were five. Until then NP authority stays state by state, while RN practice across member states runs through the Nurse Licensure Compact, which North Dakota joined in 2018.
Is JSU's Post-Master's DNP available to North Dakota residents?
That depends on JSU's answer, since no published list settles it. Contact the School of Nursing before applying and raise NDBON recognition at the same time, since any residency hours in North Dakota would bring it up. The Post-Master's DNP page covers the residencies.
