Rhode Island residents and JSU's graduate nursing programs
The first fact for a Rhode Island nurse is a limit: JSU's family and acute care NP tracks review applicants from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee alone, a list Rhode Island is not on. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN work differently, since JSU names no states for them and asks you to speak with the School of Nursing first. Rhode Island's own rules for out-of-state clinicals are light, and its 2024 compact return shapes any move.

On JSU's 2021 NP licensure disclosure, Rhode Island carries the same "Not yet determined" entry as every state but Alabama, and JSU has published no disclosure for its DNP-only or MSN programs. The disclosure page covers what that leaves open.
Rhode Island's rules for a program from another state
Rhode Island's nursing board applies rule set 216-RICR-40-05-3, which is written mainly to approve the state's own basic nursing programs. For a JSU student, the useful finding is what the rule set leaves out: no provision requires an outside school to win Board approval ahead of clinicals in Rhode Island.
One detail could come up at a site. Board-approved Rhode Island schools, the rule says, must document participation in the state's centralized registry for clinical placements within their clinical agency agreements. The rule does not say whether schools from elsewhere must do the same, so if a Rhode Island agency raises the registry, JSU's School of Nursing and that agency work out how it applies.
Practice rules, the compact and Providence-area care
Rhode Island rejoined the compact as of New Year's Day 2024. Since then, the state health department says, a qualified resident's newly issued RN or LPN license is multistate. For NPs, AANP places Rhode Island in the full practice group.
Providence-Warwick, a metro that reaches into Massachusetts, had an estimated 1,708,000 residents in 2025, and a little over 1.1 million of those live in Rhode Island. Systems there include Brown University Health and South County Health; CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island is another, as is Care New England Health System.
A Southeastern move and the NP tracks
Every one of JSU's five eligible states is a compact member, just as Rhode Island is, so a move south changes which state issues your license rather than whether it is multistate. Alabama's Board lets a nurse practice in Alabama on a valid multistate license from another compact state until Alabama becomes that nurse's primary residence; from then on, an Alabama license is needed. APRNs, it adds, need Alabama's separate advanced practice approval regardless.
Residency in the new state makes you eligible to be considered for the FNP or AGACNP track; the admissions review decides the rest. Questions JSU students ask
Is JSU's family NP track possible from a Providence address?
No, not for now. Rhode Island is outside the five Southeastern states named on JSU's graduate nursing page as eligible for the FNP and AGACNP tracks. Relocating to one of them would let you apply as its resident, with JSU's usual admissions review to follow. The five-state rule page shows the wording.
Could a Rhode Island site ask JSU about the placement registry?
It could. Rhode Island's nursing education rules attach the registry language to Rhode Island programs the Board approves and to their agreements with clinical agencies. The rule is silent on schools based elsewhere. If a Rhode Island hospital or practice brings it up, JSU's School of Nursing and that agency are the ones to settle the answer.
Can a Rhode Island multistate license cover clinicals in Alabama?
For RN-level work, yes, provided Alabama is not where you primarily live; that is how Alabama's Board treats multistate licenses issued by fellow compact states. Whether a Rhode Island license is multistate depends on when it was issued and your residency, so check your license record with the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Is JSU's Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education open to Rhode Island residents?
Start with the School of Nursing: the certificate pages ask non-Alabama residents to reach it ahead of an application. The certificate's clinical piece is NU 5982, a 100-hour teaching practicum that JSU says is arranged with each student at a convenient location. The certificate page has the course details.
