South Dakota readers meet one firm rule at JSU: its BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks take applicants from five Southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee) and nowhere else. What remains is asking the School of Nursing whether its master's-to-DNP program or its Population Health MSN can work from a South Dakota address, set against a state Board that leaves clinical agreements to schools and sites.

A Board that leaves agreements to schools and sites
A Board FAQ written for schools located outside South Dakota, last revised in mid-2020, explains that the Board stays out of approving nursing programs based in other states. When an outside school wants a student in a hospital or clinic there, the arrangement is made directly between that school and the local preceptor, the facility, or both.
What the Board looks for on the school's side is faculty coverage by someone who holds South Dakota licensure or practices there on the privilege, at the matching level, meaning an RN license to oversee RN students and an APRN license to oversee APRN students. For programs the Board approves, a preceptor's license must match or exceed the credential the student is pursuing, and APRN preceptors need practice comparable to the student's in role, focus or specialty.
Two compacts, full practice and the state's systems
South Dakota has been a working compact state for RNs since 2018. In February 2024 it also enacted the APRN Compact, joining a group of five, but that agreement does nothing until a seventh state signs on.
AANP counts South Dakota as full practice once a new NP has put in 1,040 hours with a written collaboration arrangement in place; the collaborator can be a physician, an NP holding certification, or a certified nurse midwife. For APRN licensure, the Board wants a graduate program with at least 500 hours of clinical work matched to the license's role and population focus; graduate courses in pharmacology, in pathophysiology or physiology, and in health and physical assessment round it out.
Sioux Falls, about 315,000 people in 2025, and Rapid City, near 157,000, are the two metros, with the Aberdeen micro area next. Sanford Health, Avera Health and Monument Health are examples of its health systems.
Relocating to reach the NP tracks
The FNP and AGACNP tracks open up only after you live in one of JSU's five states, and even then residency buys consideration, not a seat. Because all five use the Nurse Licensure Compact, the new home state would issue your multistate license; Alabama's Board, for example, wants an Alabama license from anyone whose primary home becomes Alabama.

Can I do Jax State's FNP track from Sioux Falls?
Not with a South Dakota residence. South Dakota is not among the five states whose residents JSU will consider for the FNP or AGACNP track. Moving to one of them brings you into consideration, while the admissions process still makes the call; the five-state rule page quotes JSU.
Is Board approval of JSU needed before South Dakota clinicals?
No approval step exists for schools from other states, according to the Board's own guidance. A placement rests on the school's agreement with the South Dakota preceptor or facility. The Board's one expectation of the school is licensed faculty coverage: someone with South Dakota licensure or the privilege, at the level of the students they oversee.
How does South Dakota's 500-hour APRN rule relate to JSU?
South Dakota licenses APRNs whose graduate program gave them 500 or more hours of clinical work matched to their role and population focus. JSU's NP tracks print per-course practicum hours in the 2026-27 catalog, yet a South Dakota resident cannot apply to them. The Post-Master's DNP asks instead for an MSN with 500 validated clinical hours at entry, with NU 5841 for a shortfall; see the Post-Master's DNP page.
Will South Dakota's APRN Compact membership carry into Alabama?
Not yet. The APRN Compact South Dakota enacted in 2024 stays switched off pending a seventh member; South Dakota was one of five by 2026. Separately, Alabama's Board requires APRNs relying on an RN license from a different compact state to obtain Alabama's own advanced practice approval first.
