Where a Virginia nurse fits in JSU's graduate programs
JSU's FNP and AGACNP tracks sit beyond reach from Virginia, since JSU considers NP applicants only from five Southeastern states, Alabama first among them. What remains is a talk with the School of Nursing about the Post-Master's DNP or the MSN in Population Health, held before you apply. On the state side, Virginia's Board of Nursing stays out of graduate programs based elsewhere.

On the NP licensure disclosure JSU posted in October 2021, Virginia's line reads "Not yet determined," as does every line except Alabama's. The licensure disclosure page covers what that means.
A Board that leaves outside graduate programs alone
Virginia's Board of Nursing states that nursing education from other states, and any program taken after licensure, lies beyond its regulation and approval. Neither its 80 percent rule for in-state clinical time nor its 18VAC90-27 site approvals touch a JSU student; both apply to Virginia-approved pre-licensure schools.
Virginia's code, at section 54.1-3001, handles the license question. An RN in good standing whose license comes from outside Virginia (another state, a U.S. territory or the District of Columbia) needs no Virginia license during enrollment in an advanced nursing program, though only for the clinical practice that curriculum requires.
Practice agreements and an incentive tied to Virginia schools
Restricted is AANP's word for Virginia. Its NPs need a practice agreement naming a patient care team physician, a requirement lifted once they attest to three years' worth of full-time clinical experience. Virginia's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018; it has passed no APRN Compact law.
Virginia's Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program is closed to JSU preceptors, because eligibility turns on the student attending a Virginia school, public or private nonprofit. SB 405, signed on the last day of March 2026, moved the program out of the state health department and into the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center, which handles hours logged from July 1, 2026 onward.
From Northern Virginia to Roanoke
Northern Virginia's piece of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro holds about 3.18 million people by the 2025 census estimate. Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk follows at roughly 1.74 million, then Richmond near 1.39 million and Roanoke close to 317,000. Systems include Inova, Sentara Health, UVA Health, Carilion Clinic and VCU Health.
If you relocate toward Tennessee or Alabama
A home in any of JSU's five states opens the NP tracks to consideration, and JSU still decides. For southwest Virginia, Tennessee is the nearest of the five, but read our Tennessee page first: a bill there, SB 2013/HB 1905, would pause approvals of outside programs that place students in Tennessee, and research could not confirm its enactment.
Your license moves with you. Each of the five is a compact state, so the Virginia multistate credential would be swapped for one from your new home. JSU phrases its RN license requirement two ways, and our RN license page puts both versions next to each other.

Can a Richmond nurse apply to JSU's AGACNP track?
Not while Virginia is home. JSU's acute care and family NP tracks take applications for consideration from five states only, and Virginia is not among them. Relocating to one of the five changes your eligibility, while admission stays JSU's decision; our five-state rule page reproduces the note.
Must the Virginia Board of Nursing approve JSU before I do clinicals in Virginia?
No Board step exists for JSU to clear, since the Board places out-of-state and post-licensure education outside its approval. What matters instead is your license and JSU's own answer: ask the School of Nursing whether it enrolls Virginia residents in the program you want.
Does a Virginia RN license work in other compact states?
Virginia has issued multistate licenses under the compact since 2018, and one covers RN work in fellow compact states for as long as Virginia is your primary residence. NP authority is a separate matter, still granted state by state, since Virginia has no APRN Compact law.
Can a Virginia nurse take JSU's MSN in Population Health?
JSU gives no state list for the MSN. Instead, its MSN and certificate pages tell nurses who live outside Alabama to check with the School of Nursing first, before any university application. The practicums are NU 5980 and NU 5985 at 254 hours apiece; our MSN Population Health guide lays out the plan of study.
