Arkansas nurses and Jax State's nursing programs
Arkansas shares a border with two of the states JSU's nurse practitioner tracks accept, Tennessee and Mississippi, yet Arkansas itself is left off that list. Residents here are outside consideration for the FNP and AGACNP tracks, while the Post-Master's DNP and the MSN in Population Health call for a word with the School of Nursing before applying.

JSU's licensure disclosure for its NP programs still carries an October 15, 2021 date and lists Arkansas, like every state outside Alabama, as not yet determined. The disclosure page explains what that label means.
No Arkansas approval step on record
On outside programs, Arkansas's Board of Nursing is one of the quieter boards. Nothing in ASBN's rules or web guidance, as searched, makes a school from another state seek approval before its students log clinical-only hours in Arkansas. Part 125 of 17 CAR, the prelicensure standards, reaches outside institutions only if they intend to start a program in Arkansas, and the APRN rules (17 CAR Part 123, Subpart 10) rely on deemed status under national accreditation. No one at ASBN has confirmed this reading, so treat it as a starting point for questions to JSU.
Under A.C.A. 17-87-103(2), nursing done incidentally to study in an ASBN-approved program needs no license. A JSU graduate student is already a licensed RN, so the practical test is whether your RN license covers Arkansas, and a multistate compact license does.
Reduced practice and a compact state
On AANP's map Arkansas is reduced practice: each NP holds a regulated physician agreement over some part of practice, and certain prescriptions need a physician protocol agreement behind them. Arkansas has issued multistate licenses since January 19, 2018; the compact sits in Title 17, Chapter 87, Subchapter 6 of its Nurse Practice Act.
Little Rock, Northwest Arkansas and the health systems
Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, close to 778,000 residents in the 2025 census estimates, edges out Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers at about 622,000, with Fort Smith (its metro crosses into Oklahoma) and Jonesboro behind. Mercy runs hospitals in Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas, and UAMS Health, Arkansas Children's, CommonSpirit's CHI St. Vincent and Baptist Health in Little Rock round out the larger names.
Across the river: Tennessee or Mississippi
For an Arkansas nurse, the five-state rule sits right next door. Residence in Tennessee or Mississippi, or farther on in Alabama, puts you among the applicants JSU considers for its NP tracks, though admission remains JSU's decision.
All five states belong to the compact, so the license step mostly means your multistate license moving to the new home state. Each neighbor views an Alabama program's clinicals its own way: Mississippi routes reviews through its Institutions of Higher Learning board, whose August 2026 list of reviewed outside programs omits JSU, and a Tennessee bill proposes a two-year pause on new out-of-state program approvals, enactment unconfirmed. Questions JSU students ask
Can I live in Little Rock and study in JSU's FNP track?
Not with an Arkansas residence. JSU reserves application consideration for its BSN-DNP nurse practitioner tracks to five states, and Arkansas is not one of them. A nurse who establishes residence in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia or Florida can be considered, with the final call resting on JSU's admissions review.
Would a JSU MSN practicum in Arkansas need state approval?
No Arkansas rule found so far requires it for clinical-only placements by a program from another state, though ASBN staff have not confirmed that. JSU still asks residents outside Alabama to contact the School of Nursing before applying to the MSN, and that conversation is the right place to ask about Arkansas practicum sites. Does my Arkansas multistate license cover clinical hours in Alabama?
It covers RN practice there while Arkansas is your primary residence. Alabama's Board of Nursing accepts a valid multistate license from another compact state unless Alabama is the nurse's home state. JSU's RN license wording differs between its web pages and the 2026-27 catalog, which the RN license page lays out.
What changes for a current JSU student who moves out of Arkansas?
JSU's graduate handbook asks every student to sign an out-of-state residence statement at enrollment and to report any change of state of residence, employment or projected clinical experience to the faculty, program coordinator and the graduate programs office. The change needs approval, and JSU warns that continued progression is not assured.
