Turn the gap into a weekly number
A total of hours owed means little until you divide it by the weeks left. The table spreads each NP practicum's catalog hours evenly across its full 2026-27 term, which gives you a baseline to hold against your own log.

ANP 7869 shows 70 hours in the catalog but 110 on JSU's AGACNP plans of study, so confirm your figure with course faculty. Divide what you still owe by the weeks remaining, and compare the result with the clinic days your preceptor can actually offer.
What JSU's rules mean for unfinished hours
JSU's grading rules are the reason to act early. Moving forward in the graduate nursing sequence requires a B or better in earlier coursework, and each NP practicum is a co-requisite of its lecture course, so an unfinished practicum can pull the lecture grade down with it. Only one course graded C or lower may be repeated, once, and the repeat has to earn an A or B.
An incomplete exists for narrow cases: something extraordinary blocks completion and you are passing once the last day to withdraw has gone by. It comes with a completion plan and a deadline in the next fall or spring term, and School of Nursing policy holds your next registration until it is cleared. Talk to your faculty before the gap grows
Your course faculty should hear about the shortfall from you first, in writing and with numbers: hours logged, hours owed, weeks left and your plan to close the gap. JSU's graduate handbook wants students to seek advice from the Program Coordinator or Lead Faculty before withdrawing from any course, so involve them before any enrollment decision.
Good questions to ask: can hours continue after the last class day, can a second preceptor join for the rest of the term, and how does simulation fit your course? JSU's track pages describe NP clinical hours as a blend of simulation and direct patient care, and Alabama's general nursing education standard limits simulation to half of a course unless the Board of Nursing authorizes more, a rule JSU itself does not cite. How that plays out for you is on what counts as clinical hours.
Why hours fall behind
Knowing the cause points straight to the fix. Common causes include:
- A preceptor with too few clinic days to cover the weekly pace.
- A late start while the preceptor, the site or your own CastleBranch items were still being cleared.
- A preceptor who withdrew partway through the term.
- A site whose patients cover only part of what the course asks, such as a family practice with few children for
FNP 7877. - Your own work schedule leaving fewer open days than you planned.
Each one has its own answer: a second preceptor for thin schedules, a quicker file for clearance delays, a replacement for a withdrawal. For that last case, see preceptor dropped out. Causes often overlap, so review your log week by week to see where the hours went.
Adding a second preceptor
A second preceptor is often the cleanest way to add hours without giving up the first. You keep the relationship you have, gain clinic days elsewhere and can fill a gap in patient mix at the same time. JSU publishes no rule against more than one preceptor in a course; your course faculty decide, and they clear each one.
We search for a clinician whose days complement your current schedule and whose patients cover what your log still lacks. It also spreads the risk: if one schedule changes late in the term, the other preceptor keeps your hours moving.
Protect the next practicum too
Trouble with hours in one term tends to spill into the next. The NP practicums run in four consecutive semesters, each offered in a single term a year, so a course that stretches past its term can collide with the start of the following practicum. Practicum I in spring, for example, leads straight into Practicum II in summer, the shortest full term of the year.

Log hours the day you earn them. A gap is far easier to fix in week four than in week twelve.
Questions JSU students ask
Can I finish JSU clinical hours after the semester ends?
Ask your course faculty first. One route JSU's catalog describes is the incomplete: an I grade for students blocked by extraordinary circumstances who are passing after the withdrawal deadline. The work must then be finished in the next fall or spring term, or the I becomes an F. It is granted case by case, so raise it early.
Can I have two preceptors in the same JSU practicum?
JSU publishes no rule against it, and the decision belongs to your course faculty, who clear every preceptor. A second preceptor works best when their clinic days fit around your first preceptor's schedule and their patients fill the gaps in your log. That combination is exactly what we look for when a student needs to add hours.
Do DNP residency hours work the same way?
Each residency, DNP 8797, DNP 8798 and DNP 8799, carries 210 hours, and the work is tied to a quality-improvement project at one site over 16 months. Falling behind there affects project milestones as well as hours, so bring your DNP Chair in early. JSU's catalog grades Residency II and III as pass or fail.
Should I tell my preceptor I am behind?
Yes, and early. A preceptor who knows the numbers may add a day, extend a shift or suggest a colleague who can take extra hours. Share the hours owed and the weeks left, and ask what is realistic. If more time with them is not possible, that answer still helps: it tells you to add a second preceptor now.
Can extra hours from one JSU practicum count toward the next?
JSU publishes no rule that carries hours from one practicum into another, and each course sets its own hours and patient focus. Treat each practicum's total as separate unless your course faculty tell you otherwise in writing, and keep your logs course by course so the records stay clear.
