How one semester can become a year
JSU's NP sequence is tightly linked. Practicum I runs in spring, II in summer, III in fall and IV the following spring, and the catalog offers each one in that term only. Every practicum is also paired with a lecture course, and if either is not passed, both are taken again together.
Put those together and a practicum that cannot be completed may wait a year for its next offering, with every later course waiting behind it. That is our reading of JSU's term notes, not a published JSU rule, and your program coordinator can confirm how it applies to your plan of study.
The DNP block has its own rhythm. Most residents are matched with a preceptor and site in late May, carry the project through fall and spring, present at Dissemination Day on campus in July and graduate in August. The MSN follows the same once-a-year pattern: NU 5980 is offered in summer only and NU 5985 in fall only.
JSU limits and deadlines that frame a delay
A delay plays out inside a set of JSU limits. These are the ones that matter most when a preceptor problem moves your dates.

Questions to take to your program coordinator
A delay is a planning conversation, and the right questions keep it short. Bring your plan of study and a written summary of what happened with your preceptor.
- Which course is affected, and when is it next offered?
- Does the lecture course paired with it also need to be repeated?
- Which fits my situation best: an incomplete, a hardship withdrawal from the clinical course alone, or a leave of absence?
- How does the change move my MSN award point, my comprehensive exam and my DNP residency start?
- What documentation does the School of Nursing need from me, and by when?
Hold this conversation before any withdrawal form is filed, since JSU's handbook asks students to seek advice from the Program Coordinator or Lead Faculty first. JSU's catalog allows a hardship withdrawal from a single clinical course when you cannot meet its essential requirements, with the Vice President for Student Affairs deciding.
Rebuilding the timeline
Getting back on schedule is mostly about the next preceptor, not the last one. Once JSU confirms when the affected course runs again, the aim is to reach that term with a cleared preceptor in place and the following course's preceptor lined up behind it.
For BSN-DNP students the chain runs into the residency. JSU's plans of study award the MSN after Practicum IV, so a later Practicum IV moves that point and, with it, the DNP 8796 pairing. Post-Master's DNP students feel a delay differently. Their residencies run back to back once DNP 8796 is done, so a lost residency site weighs most on the project calendar.

Keep the rest of your file ready
A delay also stretches your compliance calendar. A lapse found on the new start date costs time you have already lost once.
Update your items as soon as the new term is set, and keep your malpractice approval current so a site can be contacted the moment a preceptor is found. Ask for a revised plan of study in writing as soon as a delay is confirmed, and plan every search from that document.

Will missing one JSU practicum delay my graduation by a full year?
It can. Each NP practicum is offered in one term a year, and a practicum and its lecture course are retaken together, so a course left unfinished may wait a year for its next offering. Can I take a leave of absence while I find a preceptor?
JSU's graduate handbook allows a leave of one to three semesters, once per program, and reinstatement for a given term is not possible after that term's registration deadline. Ask your program coordinator whether a leave suits your situation, and use the time to line up a cleared preceptor for your return.
How long do I have to finish a JSU DNP program?
JSU's graduate handbook sets seven calendar years for the DNP and six for the MSN, with exceptions decided by the Graduate Dean. If a preceptor problem has already cost you a term, or you paused once before, check with your program coordinator how much of that window remains.
Does a delayed practicum change when I receive my MSN?
For BSN-DNP students it does. JSU's plans of study award the MSN after Practicum IV, so anything that moves Practicum IV moves that point too, and the DNP courses starting with DNP 8796 follow after it. Ask your program coordinator for a revised plan of study that shows the new dates.
Can an MSN Population Health student lose a year over one practicum?
The same pattern can apply. NU 5980 is offered in summer only, NU 5985 in fall only, and NU 5985 requires NU 5980 first. A practicum that slips may wait for its next offering. Line up settings for both practicums early, and confirm any revised plan with the MSN Program Coordinator.
