Practicum I, JSU's first clinical course for both NP tracks, falls in the spring of year two and runs in spring only. The practicums then continue through summer, fall and the following spring, each tied to a lecture course. Fail either half of a pair and both are retaken together, so a preceptor who can host every hour inside the term is worth the extra search.
FNP hours run 120, 210, 250 and 250 from FNP 7869 to FNP 7877. AGACNP hours start at 70 in ANP 7869 (110 on the plans of study, a conflict your faculty resolve) and reach 280 in ANP 7877. The first clinical course guide covers timing, and the grades and progression page explains the retake rule.
A 16-month residency site in west Alabama
The DNP residency needs one preceptor and one site from the late-May pairing in DNP 8796, or the smaller August start, through DNP 8799. The organization hosts a quality-improvement project: a fall proposal and IRB application, a January launch, eight to ten weeks of implementation, and results in July. Four on-site meetings during the spring implementation mean the preceptor's calendar matters as much as the title.
Outside the city, the right sponsor may be a clinic network, a rural health center or a public health setting as readily as a hospital unit. DCH Health System publishes no process, portal or lead time for nurse practitioner students from outside programs, and its pages do not name JSU. An archived copy describes training many students each year. If a DCH clinician is a candidate for your course, raise it with JSU's faculty, who clear every preceptor and site.
Can I do JSU clinicals in a rural west Alabama county?
Yes, provided the practice matches your course and passes JSU's faculty review. What happens if I fail a JSU practicum?
JSU pairs each practicum with lecture coursework, and if either course is not passed, both are retaken together. Only one course with a C or lower may be repeated, and more than three credits of C grades ends progression in the graduate nursing program. Who approves a Tuscaloosa preceptor for my JSU course?

Alabama's nursing education rules hold faculty responsible for planning, carrying out and evaluating every student clinical experience, and JSU's own preceptor criteria for NP courses are not public. It depends on the track. FNP 7869 carries 120 hours in the 2026-27 catalog. ANP 7869 shows 70 hours in the catalog and 110 on JSU's plans of study, and the 2024-25 graduate handbook described its hours as simulation. Ask your course faculty which figure applies to your cohort before you plan the term.
