Indiana and JSU: the programs, the rules and the options
Jax State fills its nurse practitioner tracks from five Southern states, and Hoosiers are not among them. Still open for discussion: the Post-Master's DNP and the MSN, where the School of Nursing asks out-of-state applicants to check in before applying. Indiana's own board, for its part, keeps its hands off graduate programs.

Where Indiana lands on JSU's map
JSU's BSN-DNP tracks in Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care draw applicants from a five-state region in the Southeast: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee. Everything else in the graduate lineup comes with a gentler instruction: get in touch before you apply.

JSU's 2021 NP licensure disclosure lists Indiana as not yet determined; the disclosure page says what that label means in practice.
A board that stays out of graduate programs
Indiana's nursing board, housed in the Professional Licensing Agency, concerns itself with in-state schools that turn out new RNs and LPNs. Graduate education is outside its lane: RN-BSN and graduate programs, its education page says, get no review or accreditation from it. We found no Board filing an Alabama school would make to place a graduate student in Indiana, and the state rule on eligible programs covers pre-licensure schools and nothing else.

Indiana licenses and NP practice
Indiana began issuing multistate RN licenses in July 2020, so an Indiana compact license carries into the other member states, JSU's five NP states among them. The APRN Compact is not active in Indiana. AANP labels Indiana reduced practice; some portion of what an Indiana NP does must be covered by a physician collaboration the state regulates, the same broad category Alabama falls into.
Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and the border metros
The Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro counted about 2.2 million people in 2025, and Fort Wayne passed 466,000. The Chicago metro spills into northwest Indiana, while Louisville's metro takes in part of southern Indiana. Because Illinois is outside the compact, a nurse from northwest Indiana would need an Illinois license for clinical time across that line; our Illinois guide covers it.
Among large systems, Indiana University Health and Franciscan Health operate here, as do Parkview Health, Ascension St. Vincent and Community Health Network, all named only as examples.
A plan for moving to JSU's NP states
- Choose the state.Residency in one of the five opens the door to JSU's review, not to a seat.
- Settle the license.All five share the compact with Indiana. If Alabama becomes home, its board wants you on an Alabama license.
- Check that state's rule.Mississippi and Tennessee each carry an open question about outside programs; read the Mississippi and Tennessee guides.
- Keep JSU informed.Once enrolled, run any move, new employer or new clinical location past JSU for approval.

Questions JSU students ask
Can an Indiana resident join JSU's AGACNP track?
Not while you live in Indiana. The acute care track and the FNP track share one residency rule, limited to five Southern states. Moving south would make you eligible for JSU's review, and the admission call would still be JSU's. The Post-Master's DNP and MSN have no posted list; the School of Nursing prefers to hear from out-of-state applicants before they apply.
Does Indiana's board need to approve a JSU residency in Indiana?
Our research found no such step. Indiana's board confines itself to accrediting in-state schools that prepare new RNs and LPNs, leaving RN-BSN and graduate education to others. The site's contract and JSU's own clearance still apply, and every preceptor and site still needs sign-off from JSU's faculty.
Does an Indiana multistate license work in Alabama?
It can while Indiana remains your primary state of residence, since both states belong to the compact. Once you move to Alabama and make it home, Alabama's board expects you to hold an Alabama license. The compact covers RN practice only, and Alabama's board says APRNs holding another state's multistate license still apply to it for advanced practice approval.
Must Indiana NPs work with a physician?
For part of their practice, yes. AANP puts Indiana in its reduced tier because the state requires a regulated collaboration with a physician for at least some of what NPs do. Alabama, where JSU is based, sits in the same reduced category, so a JSU graduate would find a broadly similar model in both states.
