JSU's Emergency Management concentration joins the Population Health MSN core to five emergency management courses, 53 credits in all, taught online. Its practicum time comes only from NU 5980 and NU 5985, two 254-hour population health courses that close the plan. What the concentration adds to the Population Health MSN
The 2026-27 catalog names this program Population Health - Emergency Management (MSN), and the School of Nursing's web page calls it the MSN with a Concentration in Emergency Management. Both describe the same thing: the Population Health MSN plus a block of emergency management coursework. The plain MSN is 38 credits; the concentration takes it to 53.
JSU presents the coursework as fully online, with a practicum you cannot skip. Its MSN pages add a caveat about campus visits, naming orientation, simulation on site and presentations of scholarly work as possible events, so ask about any campus dates before you book travel. None of the emergency management courses carry practicum hours. All of your field time sits in the two population health practicums that every JSU MSN option shares, so the quality of those two placements shapes the program as much as it does for students in the plain Population Health MSN.

The four required EM courses work through the foundations of emergency management, disaster response, emergency preparedness and the medical side of emergency management. The practicum pair comes last, which puts every hour of your field work into the final two semesters.
NU 5980 and NU 5985: where the practicum hours live
The 2026-27 catalog gives each practicum 6 credits and 254 practicum hours. Population Health I (NU 5980) is a summer-only course, and Population Health II (NU 5985) is fall-only. On the sample plan they occupy Semesters 6 and 7, one straight after the other.
The catalog gates both courses. NU 5980 needs NU 5101, 5204, 5207, 5213, 5218, 5227 and 5744 first, which is why it follows Advanced Pathophysiology in Semester 5. NU 5985 needs NU 5722 and NU 5980. Since each practicum is offered once a year, a missing prerequisite pushes it back to the following year's summer or fall.
The catalog states that MSN clinical experiences are shaped to each student's individual learning needs, and JSU publishes no list of approved settings for these two courses. Your course faculty decide what fits. The population health practicums page covers both courses in depth.
The 254 hours apply to each course. Budget two practicum semesters in a row, summer and then fall, not one.
Details JSU's sources disagree on
The Semester 5 elective is the plainest conflict. The catalog offers EM 5648, EM 5670 or EM 5896, while the School of Nursing's web plan offers EM 5670 or EM 5876. Register from the 2026-27 catalog list, and ask your advisor before picking a course that shows up only on the web plan.
Delivery wording differs as well. JSU's MSN overview describes the whole program as online apart from the practicum, yet the program pages add that on-campus events may be required. The only graduate handbook posted is the 2024-2025 edition, which still prints older three-digit course numbers; the catalog's four-digit numbers are the current ones.
When two JSU sources disagree, the 2026-27 catalog comes first. The MSN program coordinator and your course faculty settle anything the catalog leaves open, and it pays to get their answer in writing before you build a practicum schedule on it.
Clearance comes before the first site call
Under JSU's graduate handbook, your malpractice policy is bought through the School of Nursing, and the proof has to be approved before you reach out to any practicum site. Your immunizations, CPR card, license and signed forms are tracked in CastleBranch, and gaps there can hold up registration.
Get this file complete during the semester before NU 5980, well ahead of May. The CastleBranch page and the malpractice and health insurance page set out each item and the order JSU expects.
One more handbook rule touches site choice. At enrollment every graduate student signs a statement about out-of-state residence. Moving, changing jobs or shifting where you expect to do clinical work all have to be reported and approved, and JSU notes that progression is not assured after such a change. If a practicum across a state line is on your mind, raise it with the program early.

Admission and progression facts that shape your timing
Entry comes three times a year: fall, spring and summer. The bar is a 3.0 GPA, with 2.5 enough for conditional admission, plus a current, unencumbered RN license; no GRE or MAT is required. If Alabama is not your home state, JSU wants to hear from you before you submit an application.
After you enroll, grades below B carry weight. A C or worse must be retaken and raised to an A or B, JSU allows that retake for just one course, and C grades in more than 3 credits mean leaving the program. The MSN must be finished within six years. The grades and progression page shows how a repeat can move a practicum by a full year. An incomplete left unresolved also blocks registration for the next semester, so an unfinished NU 5980 can hold up NU 5985.
Questions JSU students ask
Do the emergency management courses at JSU include clinical hours?
No. In the 2026-27 catalog the EM courses carry no practicum hours. The concentration's field time comes entirely from NU 5980 and NU 5985, the two population health practicums, at 254 hours each. Those two courses are the ones that need a preceptor and a site, so they drive your placement planning.
Can I start the Emergency Management MSN in spring or summer?
Yes. JSU lists fall, spring and summer entry. The deadlines run April 1 for summer, July 1 for fall and November 1 for spring, and JSU still considers late applications while seats remain. The seven-semester web plan assumes a fall start, so other entrants follow a different sequence. Ask your advisor which year your summer and fall practicums will land.
How is this different from JSU's Emergency Preparedness Nursing Coordinator certificate?
The certificate is 15 semester hours of EM coursework: EM 5105, 5545, 5555 and 5675 plus one of EM 5648, 5670 or 5896. It has no practicum. The MSN concentration adds the Population Health nursing core and both 254-hour practicums, which brings it to 53 credits.
Can I complete my population health practicum where I work?
JSU's published graduate sources give no rule on practicum hours at your own employer. Ask your course faculty before you plan around your workplace, and get the answer in writing. The workplace clinicals page lists the questions worth settling first.
When should I start looking for a practicum site?
Start while you are still in the core courses, ideally the fall or spring before NU 5980. Malpractice approval and CastleBranch items must be done before any site contact, and sites need time for contract paperwork. JSU publishes no lead time, so an early start protects your summer.
