New Mexico and JSU nursing: programs, board rules and clinicals
New Mexico is not among the five states whose residents JSU will consider for its FNP and AGACNP tracks; that list runs Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. The Post-Master's DNP and the MSN in Population Health work differently: JSU posts no state list for them and asks you to talk with the School of Nursing first. JSU's NP licensure disclosure, dated 2021, gives New Mexico the same not yet determined mark it gives every state outside Alabama. How JSU applies the NP limit is on the five-state rule page.
NMBON's more-than-one-semester rule
New Mexico measures an outside program's presence in semesters. Once its clinical or field work inside the state would pass one semester, 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC requires it to apply to NMBON for clinical placement approval, and approval from a home-state board does not excuse it from New Mexico's minimum standards in 16.12.3.12.
JSU's programs run longer than that. The DNP residency spreads over three courses and keeps one preceptor and site for 16 months, and the MSN practicums land in two separate terms. Because the rule's part addresses education for New Mexico licensure and never names NP or post-licensure programs, only NMBON and the School of Nursing can say whether a JSU residency here would need that approval.
Licensing and practice in New Mexico
On the licensing side, NMBON has issued multistate RN licenses since the compact's start date there, January 19, 2018, and AANP places New Mexico with the full practice states. The table pairs Albuquerque, by far the largest metro, and Santa Fe with example systems. Las Cruces, near 229,000 people, and Farmington, near 120,000, are the other two metros in the 2025 census estimates.

Relocating to Alabama or a neighboring state
Once your home is in Alabama or one of the four bordering states JSU names (Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee), the FNP and AGACNP tracks become ones you can apply to, with JSU's admissions review making the decision.
Your New Mexico multistate license would give way to one from the new home state, since the compact licenses you where you primarily live. JSU's catalog ties the RN license to your current state of clinical practice while its program pages say a U.S. license; the RN license page compares the two. Enrolled students must report a change of residence and have it approved.

Questions JSU students ask
Can a New Mexico nurse apply to JSU's AGACNP track?
The AGACNP track, like the FNP track, is reserved for applicants living in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee, so a New Mexico address rules it out. Relocating changes that, and JSU still reviews every application on its own merits before admitting anyone.
Would a JSU DNP residency in Albuquerque need NMBON approval?
It might. Any program whose New Mexico clinical time outlasts a semester is expected to apply for NMBON placement approval, and a JSU residency covers three semesters at a single site. The rule never mentions NP or post-licensure programs, so get answers from NMBON and the School of Nursing first.
What does New Mexico expect of a clinical preceptor?
Under NMBON's education rules, the preceptor is a nurse with at least two years in practice whose own license matches or exceeds what the student is training for, and outside programs approved for placements in the state must meet those standards. JSU's faculty still clear every preceptor; the preceptor requirements page covers what JSU itself publishes.
Is JSU's Post-Master's DNP open to New Mexico residents?
Possibly; JSU has not published a state list for it. Raise it with the School of Nursing ahead of any application, as JSU's graduate page requests, and mention New Mexico's placement rule in the same conversation, since a residency here would stretch across three semesters.
