Gulf Coast students, northeast Alabama school
JSU's online graduate programs reach the whole state, and Mobile-area students take part from its far southwest corner. Coursework lives in Canvas, but clinical hours happen in person with a preceptor near home, and campus events mean a trip across most of Alabama. Distance also raises the value of a preceptor who stays, because replacing a site late in a term is harder from the coast.

How Mobile's systems describe student rotations
Three Mobile systems say something public about students, each in a different way.
- Infirmary Health: an archived copy of its student page describes requests submitted by the school before set deadlines, with a signed student-preceptor contract. Check the live page before relying on it.
- USA Health: no page for students from outside schools was found.
- Springhill Medical Center: an online practicum request form that includes an MSN option.
Read these as a guide to where Mobile clinicians practice and the paperwork a hospital site may add, not as openings held for JSU. Private offices, urgent care and community clinics across Mobile and Baldwin counties matter just as much, particularly for FNP students. Access on the coast: primary care and mental health
HRSA's June 30, 2026 summary shows how uneven access is across Alabama. Mental health is the widest gap: 67 designations statewide, about 2.93 million residents inside them, and just 28.40 percent of the need met. Primary care does better at roughly 63 percent, spread across 135 designations. HRSA's figures count practitioners across areas and populations; they are not a measure of nurse practitioners alone.
For an FNP student, a primary care preceptor who also manages common mental health conditions can widen a practicum's patient mix, and we ask about it when we screen a practice. JSU offers no psychiatric NP track, so the aim is breadth inside your own FNP or AGACNP track, with your course faculty confirming the fit.
Neighbors in Mississippi and Florida
JSU considers residents of five states for its NP tracks, and two of them border Mobile. A student in coastal Mississippi or the Florida Panhandle may look to Mobile for clinicals, and a Mobile resident may find the right preceptor across a state line.
The rules differ on each side. Mississippi's Institutions of Higher Learning reviews out-of-state programs that hold clinicals in the state, and JSU did not appear on its August 2026 list of programs reviewed; it asks for review requests at least four months ahead of clinicals, so a cross-border plan should reach the program early. For Florida, no provision requiring approval of out-of-state post-licensure or APRN programs was found. The Mississippi and Florida guides cover each state in full.

Every course runs alongside a lecture course, so the preceptor's schedule has to fit the whole semester, not just the first few weeks. We check that fit before proposing any preceptor.
Campus trips, and why Gulf Coast students choose us
Campus days mean real travel from the coast, so they belong on the calendar before the clinical schedule is set. JSU lists orientation, simulated learning on site and the presentation of scholarly projects among the possible campus events for its online graduate students. Only Dissemination Day, in July, carries a published month; the on-campus requirements page collects the rest of what JSU says.

Does USA Health take nurse practitioner students from other schools?
USA Health posts no page for students from outside programs, so there is no published process to follow. Raise any USA Health clinician you are considering with JSU's faculty first, since they clear every preceptor and site. Many Mobile clinicians also practice in private offices and clinics outside the large systems.
What does Infirmary Health ask for student rotations?
An archived copy of Infirmary Health's student page describes placements requested by the school before set deadlines, with a signed contract between student and preceptor. Because that reading comes from an archive, check Infirmary's current page before planning around it, and confirm with JSU's faculty that the site fits your course.
Can I live in Mississippi and do my JSU clinicals in Mobile?
JSU accepts Mississippi residents into its NP tracks, and the signed residence statement JSU requires should show where you plan to train. Clinicals in Alabama sit outside Mississippi's review of out-of-state programs. Before you commit, confirm the RN license JSU expects for your clinical state with the program coordinator, since JSU's own sources word that rule two ways.
Can my nursing education teaching practicum be in Mobile?
JSU plans the teaching practicum in NU 5982 around each student's location, and the MSN concentration describes it as taking place in settings of the student's choice. A Mobile college, a hospital education department or a clinical unit can work when the course faculty approve it. The practicum carries 100 hours.
Are there acute care NP preceptors on the Gulf Coast?
Acute care nurse practitioners work in the hospitals and hospital-based services that serve Mobile and the coast, and that is where AGACNP preceptors come from. The hours climb from ANP 7869 to 280 in ANP 7877, so a preceptor with steady shifts matters. Your course faculty approve each preceptor and site.
